About penance for those observing pagan rituals (jumping over fires).
We command from now on that no one should light fires in front of their shops or houses on new moons, over which others, according to some ancient custom, madly dare to jump. Therefore, whoever does anything like this, if he is a cleric, let him be deposed, and if he is a layman, he must be excommunicated. For in the 2nd book of Kings it is written: “And Manasseh built an altar for all the host of heaven in the two courts of the house of the Lord, and caused his children to pass through the fire, and practiced sorcery, and practiced sorcery, and made ventriloquists, and multiplied the number of sorcerers, and multiplied the evil works of the Lord, to provoke Him to anger” (see 2 Kings 21:5-6).
