The mandatory requirement of celibacy for deacons and elders is condemned.
We learned that in the Roman Church it is a rule that those who are to be ordained deacons or presbyters promise to no longer have marital relations with their wives. We, following the ancient rule of apostolic strictness and order, wish that the legal marriage of consecrated husbands will continue to remain indissoluble, and we in no way destroy their union with their wives and do not deprive them of conjugal intimacy at appropriate times. Therefore, if anyone turns out to be worthy of ordination to the rank of subdeacon, or deacon, or presbyter, let him not be prevented from entering this degree because he is cohabiting with his lawful wife. And let us not require from him at his ordination an obligation that he will leave legal marital intimacy with his own wife, so that we are not forced thereby to offend the marriage established by God and blessed by His presence. After all, the Gospel saying says: What God has joined together, let no man put asunder (Matt. 19:6), and the apostle teaches: Marriage is honorable and the bed undefiled (Heb. 13:4), and also: Are you united with your wife? do not seek divorce (1 Cor. 7:27). We also know that those who gathered in Carthage, caring for the purity of life of the ministers of the Church, said that subdeacons who touch the Sacred Mysteries, and deacons, and presbyters, according to their definitions, should abstain from their wives, so that we also preserve the apostolic tradition, which has been observed since ancient times, knowing the time of every thing, and especially fasting and prayer. After all, those approaching the altar at the time when they approach the Holy Gifts should be abstinent in everything, so that they can receive from God what they simply ask for.
So, if someone dares, violating the apostolic rules, to deprive any of the consecrated ones, that is, presbyters, or deacons, or subdeacons, of union and marital intimacy with his lawful wife, let him be deposed. In the same way, if a presbyter or deacon, under the pretext of reverence, expels his wife, let him be excommunicated, but if he remains inflexible, let him be deposed.
