Against the heresy of Pelagius. Anathema to those who claim that saints in the Lord’s Prayer ask for forgiveness of sins only out of humility, and not out of truth.
It was pleasing: anyone who declares that the words of the Lord’s Prayer, in which we say forgive us our debts (Matthew 6:12; Luke 11:4), are spoken by the saints out of humility, and not out of truth itself—let him be anathema. After all, who would tolerate such a praying person who lies not to people, but to the Lord Himself, says with his lips that he wants forgiveness, but says in his heart that he has no sins for which he needs forgiveness?

Ὁμοίως ἤρεσεν, ἵνα οἵτινεσδήποτε αὐτὰ τὰ ῥήματα τῆς δεσποτικῆς εὐχῆς, ὅπου λέγομεν, Ἄφες ἡμῖν τὰ ὀφειλήματα ἡμῶν, οὕτω βούλονται ἀπὸ τῶν ἁγίων λέγεσθαι, ὡς ταπεινοφρόνως καὶ οὐκ ἀληθῶς ταῦτα λεχθῆναι, ἀνάθεμα εἴη. Τὶς γὰρ ὑπενέγκοι τὸν εὐχόμενον, μὴ ἀνθρώποις, ἀλλ᾽ αὐτῷ τῷ Κυρίῳ ψευδόμενον, τὸν τοῖς χείλεσιν αὐτοῦ λέγοντα θέλειν ἀφεθῆναι, τῇ δὲ καρδίᾳ λέγοντα, τὰς ὀφειλούσας ἀφεθῆναι ἁμαρτίας αὐτῷ μὴ ἔχειν.[1]
