Against the heresy of Pelagius. Anathema to those who claim that it is not appropriate to speak about the absence of sins only out of humility, and not out of truth.
It was pleasing: anyone who considers and says that the words of the holy Apostle John, if we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us (1 John 1:8) should be understood in this way: we should not say “there is no sin in us” out of humility, and not because it is truly so, let him be anathema. After all, the apostle continues and adds the following: If we confess our sins, then He, being faithful and righteous, will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). It is clearly shown here that this is said not only out of humility, but also out of truth. After all, the apostle could have said: If we say that we have no sin, we exalt ourselves and there is no humility in us, but by saying we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us, he clearly showed: the one who says that there is no sin in him does not speak the truth, but lies.
