On the prohibition of clergy, under threat of eruption, from inflicting corporal punishment with their own hands or through other persons.
Although the apostolic and divine canon prescribes the ejection of those priests who attack with beatings the faithful who have fallen into sins, or the infidels who have committed unjust acts, but those who come up with how to satisfy their own anger, perverting the apostolic institutions, attribute this, perverting the apostolic institutions, only to those who beat them with their own hands, despite the fact that neither this rule has such a meaning, nor common sense allows one to think so. After all, it is truly reckless and very sinful to throw out the one who personally inflicted three or four blows, and to leave the one who, taking advantage of the freedom given to him, gave the order to beat him and cruelly extended the punishment even to death, unpunished. Consequently, the mentioned rule punishes beatings in general, and we affirm this: it follows that the priest of God should admonish the outrageous person with teachings, admonitions, and sometimes church penances, but should not throw himself on human bodies with whips and blows. If some turn out to be completely rebellious and not obedient to admonition through penance, no one forbids them to admonish them through accusation before the authorities of that place. And the 5th rule of the Council of Antioch prescribes that those who bring confusion into the Church and organize rebellions in it must be brought to order with the help of external authority.

Καὶ γὰρ καὶ ὁ τῆς ἐν Ἀντιοχείᾳ συνόδου πέμπτος κανών, τοὺς θορυβοῦντας καὶ στάσεις τῇ ἐκκλησίᾳ παρεισάγοντας διὰ τῆς ἔξωθεν χειρὸς ἐκανόνισεν ἐπιστρέφεσθαι.
