The divine and sacred apostolic rule considers those who castrate themselves to be suicides and, if they are priests, then casts them out; if not, he does not allow them to the priesthood. From this it becomes clear that if one who castrates himself is a suicide, then one who castrates another is, without a doubt, a murderer, and one can rightly call him a blasphemer of creation itself. Therefore, the Holy Council decreed: if a bishop, or presbyter, or deacon is exposed for having either made someone a eunuch with his own hand, or ordered someone else to do it, let him be deposed, and if a layman does this, then he must be excommunicated, except in the case where some illness forces the sick person to be castrated. Just as the 1st rule of the Council of Nicaea does not punish those who have undergone the operation of castration during illness, because they are sick, so we do not condemn the priests who order the castration of the sick, and we do not blame the laity who personally perform the castration, for we consider this a healing of the disease, and not an evil intent against the creation or blasphemy against the creation.
