Victims of acts of violence based on religion or belief are commemorated annually, internationally, on August 22, through a day established by the United Nations.

The celebration of this holiday is an opportunity to show solidarity with people affected by religious persecution and discrimination, as well as to reaffirm the need to protect the right of every person to freely express their faith or beliefs.

Religious freedom, fundamental right  The date of August 22 was set by the UN General Assembly through Resolution A/RES/73/296, adopted in 2019 for the International Day of Remembrance for Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief.

The document condemns acts of violence directed against people based on religious or belief criteria and emphasizes the need to provide support to victims and their families.

Freedom of religion or belief, freedom of opinion and expression, the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of association are interdependent rights, enshrined in articles 18, 19 and 20 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
