My father-in-law moved in with us. It's hard for me. What should I do?translated

September 25, 2026 · 1 min read

Reader question:

We have been living with my husband for 4 years, a child was born a year ago. The husband's father left his common-law wife and went on a drinking binge. My husband took him to us for a while. He feels better, but he doesn’t leave, dictates the rules, and is indignant that I help my mother (she lives alone). It’s stressful at home, they demand that I, in addition to household chores, meet my father-in-law’s requirements. It’s hard with a child; I have no energy in the evening. I told my husband that I couldn’t live like this, it would lead to divorce. He replies that he cannot kick his father out. I'm afraid that my father-in-law will decide to stay forever. This will be too much for me. What to do?

You should initiate a calm conversation with your husband and explain that you cannot bear the burden of not only...

My daughter went through something similar when her husband’s dad moved in after his divorce. The constant rules and extra cooking wore her down fast, especially with a new baby. Maybe sit down with your husband again, just the two of you, and ask him what his plan is for a firm move-out date — because “for now” can stretch forever if nobody sets it.
