On September 13, on the day of the celebration of the Council of Simbirsk Saints, at 8:00 on Cathedral Square in Ulyanovsk, the Divine Liturgy will be held for the first time under the open sky on the site of the destroyed Trinity Cathedral. Local historian Olga Novosad spoke about the fate of the majestic church, which became the main architectural and spiritual loss of Simbirsk-Ulyanovsk.
— Olga Nikolaevna, please tell us when the idea to build the Trinity Cathedral in Simbirsk appeared?
— The idea appeared in 1815: then the Simbirsk nobility decided to dedicate the main cathedral of the city to the victory over Napoleon in the Patriotic War of 1812. Initially, it was planned to rebuild the already existing warm Trinity Cathedral and consecrate it in the name of St. Alexander Nevsky.
But the Ministry of the Interior came to the conclusion that it was practically impossible to transform the old church into a new, durable building. Therefore, it was decided to build a new cold church. Initially, the church was called the Cathedral of St. Alexander Nevsky, in honor of the heavenly patron of the reigning Alexander I at that time.
