“On the Soul and the Resurrection” by Saint Gregory of Nyssa

The work “On the Soul and the Resurrection” by Saint Gregory of Nyssa is one of the most significant texts in Patristic literature concerning the soul, death, and resurrection. It is a dialogue between Gregory and his sister Macrina, shortly before her repose (her feast is celebrated on July 19).

Gregory approaches Macrina as a disciple seeking answers to existential questions. The illness and imminent departure of his sister lead him to reflect on fundamental issues: what the soul is, what its relationship to the body is, and how the resurrection of the dead is to be understood.

According to the teaching developed in the work, the soul is neither identical to the body nor entirely dependent on its corruption. It is an immaterial, rational, and grace-filled reality that receives life from God. Human beings are not only soul or only body, but a unity of soul and body. This unity is a fundamental element of Gregory of Nyssa’s anthropology. Death, therefore, does not mean the absolute annihilation of the human being, but rather the separation of this unity, which nevertheless cannot nullify God’s providence for the human person.
