Holy Monastery of Symvoulos Christos: One of the oldest monasteries in Cyprustranslated

August 3, 2026 · 1 min read

The Holy Monastery of Symvoulos Christos is one of the oldest monasteries in Cyprus, since it dates back to the 6th - 7th century AD. According to one version, the monastery took its name from the hagiographic passage of the prophet Isaiah "...and his name is called, Angel of great counsel, wonderful Counselor..." (Isaiah 8:6).

Another version for the name of the monastery is the fact that councils of the bishops of the local churches of Cyprus were held in this place. But the frequent Arab raids during the 9th century, which seriously affected many parts of the island, resulted in the looting and destruction of the monastery, as well as the inhuman slaughter of the trained monks.

The wonderful and dynamic presence of the holy glorious martyr George the Trophy Bearer in recent years, to whose name one of the churches of the ancient monastery was dedicated, brought this ruined and forgotten place back to the surface. Through many revelations and miracles, Saint George renovates and makes the holy pilgrimage, a source of spiritual edification for multitudes of believers, who flock from every corner of the island and obtain health of soul and body.

With God's help and fatherly guidance...

It’s interesting about the name from the prophet Isaiah, “Wonderful Son, Counselor.” I had never heard of the fact that bishops met there for councils before. It’s good that St. George raised this place from ruins again, now people are coming and getting help.
