Magnifica Humanitas seeks to protect Africa from new forms of slavery

Historian and Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus of Bukoba Diocese in Tanzania, Method Kilaini, has spoken of his immense gratitude for Pope Leo’s moral courage in issuing the first papal apology for the Holy See’s role in legitimising the transatlantic slave trade as well as failing to condemn the forced enslavement of an estimated 10 to 12 million Africans across the Atlantic to the Americas where they laboured on plantations under brutal conditions.

Kudos to Bishop Killine for speaking directly on this. 10-12 million people is not just a number, behind it lies the pain of many families. Hopefully, they will also work as needed against new forms of slavery in Africa.

Yes, these forms of slavery today are truly vile, especially human trafficking and child trafficking in cobalt mines. Here in Hajnówka, we also collected money for a similar project in Africa, I remember my son helping to pack medicine packages. Yes, human trafficking and these children in cobalt mines are a shame for our world. Magnifica Humanitas now in Tanzania is mainly focusing on building small schools and protecting girls from early marriages - Bishop Kilaini mentioned this.
