To make pilgrimage more accessible: a fundraiser has been announced for the construction of a church and a pilgrimage center in Surskytranslated

September 3, 2026 · 1 min read

With the blessing of Metropolitan Longin of Simbirsk and Novospassky, in the left wing of the former house of the Sokolov merchants in the working-class village of Surskoye, it is planned to build a church in the name of St. Sergius of Radonezh.

In 2015, the mansion of the Sokolov sisters, deeply religious, pious women who lived in the village of Promzino in the 19th century, was transferred to the Simbirsk diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church. The building is one of the most beautiful historical mansions in Sursky, but it is in poor condition and requires renovation.

“The construction of the Sergius Church will allow the parish of the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker to perform services during the period of major repairs of the main church of the village, which is planned for next year,” said the dean of the Sursky district, the rector of the church in the name of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, r.p. Sursk priest Georgy Dzhmil.—Over time, this house will house a pilgrimage center with a refectory and a small hotel for pilgrims who come to pray at Mount Nikolskaya throughout the year. A complete renovation requires large investments, so all work will be carried out in stages.

Dear brothers and sisters! We ask you to provide all possible financial assistance...

The old Sokolov sisters’ house sounds like a real gem—hope the Sergius church in the left wing gets going soon so Father George’s parish has a place while they fix up St. Nicholas next year. I’ll chip in what I can this week.

The Sokolov sisters sound like they were the real thing—deeply devout women who left their home for something good. I’ll send a bit from my pension this week to help Father George get the Sergius chapel started before the big repair on St Nicholas next year.

The Sokolov sisters really did live their faith — handing the house over to the Church like that was no small thing. Father George will make good use of your help getting the Sergius chapel going before they close St Nicholas for repairs. I'll chip in a bit from my next run too.

The Sokolov sisters really did live their faith by giving that house over. Good to hear you're pitching in from your pension, Laura—every bit helps Father George get the Sergius chapel ready before they shut down St. Nicholas for repairs next year. I'll add something from my next delivery paycheck too.
