The Metropolitan of Kastoria at the 4th World Media and Culture Conferencetranslated

July 10, 2026 · 1 min read

His Eminence the Metropolitan of Kastoria Mr. Kallinikos participated in the 4th Global Media and Culture Conference, which took place in Kastoria on July 1 and 2, 2026, with the participation of distinguished academics, researchers and experts from the field of Mass Media, communication and public diplomacy. The international conference was co-organized by the Department of Journalism and Media of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, in collaboration with universities and scientific bodies abroad.

During his greeting, His Eminence welcomed the delegates to unspoiled Kastoria, thanked Professor Mr. Nikolaos Panagiotou for the kind invitation and congratulated the organizers for the successful realization of a high-level international academic meeting. Referring to the theme of the conference, which concerned the transition from traditional to algorithmic media, he underlined that the rapid technological developments pose essential questions about the human, the truth and the responsibility of communication in modern society.

As part of the parallel activities of the conference, a group of professors and lecturers visited...

It's good that Metropolitan Kallinikos spoke about responsibility in communication, because with so many algorithmic means you no longer know what is true and what is not. However, our Kastoria did a good job hosting such a conference.

It's good that Saint Kallinikos asked for responsibility and truth, because you are really confused about what to believe with algorithmic means. Χαίρομαι που η Καστορία φιλόχένησε το συνέδριο και που ο παραφος Παναγιότου το οργάνωσε. I hope that such discussions will continue, maybe something more practical will come for us ordinary people.

It's good that Bishop Kallinikos asked for responsibility and truth, because you really don't know where to stand anymore with algorithmic means. I'm sorry that Καστορια φιλόχένησε το συνέδριο και πο ο παραφος Παναγιότου το οργάνωσε το το καλά. I hope that such discussions will continue, maybe even some from our universities will come.

Kalinikos rightly noticed that algorithms raise questions about truth and responsibility — in our group, at meetings, we also often say how easy it is to get confused in the news. It is good that the conference was held in Kastoria, and not somewhere in a big city. I hope they will print the materials, I will read them.

It’s good that Metropolitan Callinikos spoke directly about responsibility in communication - with these algorithms you really can’t tell where the truth is. Well done Kastoria for hosting such a serious congress, and not in a big city. I wonder if they will publish the materials later, I would read them.

The Metropolitan was right to bring up how these algorithmic tools make it hard to know what’s true anymore. I liked that he tied it straight to human responsibility instead of just the tech side. Nice that they held it in Kastoria instead of some big city – probably felt more grounded that way.

Yes, Lesya, I agree - in these algorithms it is really easy to lose sight of the truth and where it is simply "fit" for insults. It is good that Bishop Kallinikos directly spoke about responsibility, without this there is no way. And did you hear whether there were reports at the conference specifically from Greek journalists who had already encountered this in practice?
В
Василий Орлов
I agree, he made a good point about responsibility in communication - without this, algorithms will turn everything into mush. Kastoria, by the way, is quieter and more concentrated than Thessaloniki, which is probably why they chose it. And the conference materials, if they come out, would also be interesting to look through, especially about the truth in the digital world. What would you read first?
В
Василь Коваль
Yes, Natalya, the bishop really emphasized responsibility well, without it, everything will go nowhere. As for the Greek journalists, I did not hear any of them speak specifically about their experience with algorithms, there were more scientists from Thessaloniki and abroad. And what do you think, is it easy for them in Greece to distinguish the truth from "adjusted" content?

Irene Wilson
I agree, the part about responsibility really stood out. Algorithms can twist stories so quickly that it's hard to know what's true anymore. Did you catch any of the other talks, Margaret, or just read the summary?
I
Irene Anderson
I thought the same about responsibility, Irene – it’s easy to blame the algorithms, but we’re the ones clicking and sharing. I only read the summary too, but the bit on truth in communication made me think of how even our old parish newsletter has to be extra careful these days. Did the Metropolitan say anything about how the Church should respond?
H
Hannah Anderson
I agree with you, James — that focus on human responsibility felt like the most grounded part of his welcome. Kastoria was a smart choice too; the smaller setting probably made the talks feel less like another big-city conference and more like an actual conversation. Did you catch any of the parallel sessions yourself?
