1) Since many have tried to set forth in order the narratives of the things that have happened among us, 2) as those who from the very beginning were witnesses and ministers of the word conveyed to us, 3) I also saw [that it is good], having carefully examined everything from the beginning, to describe in order to you, venerable Theophilus, 4) so ​​that you would know the truth of those words in which you were instructed. 5) In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a certain priest named Zechariah, from the line of Abia, and his wife was one of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. 6) Both of them were righteous before God, walking according to all the commandments and justifications of the Lord impeccably. 7) And they had no children, because Elizabeth was barren, and both grew old in their days. 8) It happened when he, in the order of his turn, performed sacred acts before God, 9) according to the custom of the priesthood, the lot fell to him to offer incense, entering the church of the Lord, 10) and the whole multitude of people prayed outside, at the hour of incense. 11) The Angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right hand of the altar of incense. 12) And Zechariah was dismayed when he saw [him], and fear fell upon him. 13) The angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will call his name John; 14) and there will be joy and gladness for you, and many will rejoice at his birth, 15) for he will be great before the Lord; and he will not drink wine or strong drink, and will be filled with the Holy Spirit from his mother’s womb; 16) And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God; 17) and he himself will go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn back the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the faithless to the wisdom of the righteous, [in order] to prepare for the Lord a perfect people.” 18) And Zechariah said to the angel: “How do I know this? For I am old, and my wife is old in her days.” 19) And, answering, the Angel said to him: “I am Gabriel, standing before God, and I was sent to speak with you and bring this good news to you. 20) And behold, you will remain silent and will not be able to speak until the day when this comes to pass, because you did not believe my words, which will happen in due time.” 21) And the people waited for Zechariah and marveled that he delayed in the church. 22) Having gone out, he could not speak to them; and they understood that he had seen a vision in the church; and he communicated with them by signs, and remained mute. 23) And it came to pass that when the days of his ministry were ended, he returned to his house. 24) After these days Elizabeth his wife conceived, and hid herself for five months, saying: 25) “For thus did the Lord do unto me in the days in which he looked [on me, to] remove from me the reproach of men.” 26) In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to the city of Galilee, which was called Nazareth, 27) to a virgin betrothed to a husband named Joseph, from the house of David; and the name of the Virgin is Mary. 28) And entering to Her, the Angel said: “Rejoice, full of grace! The Lord is with You; Blessed are You among women." 29) When she heard it, she was embarrassed by his words and wondered what kind of greeting it would be. 30) And the Angel said to Her: “Do not be afraid, Mary, for You have found favor with God. 31) Behold, you will conceive in your womb and give birth to a Son, and you will call His name Jesus. 32) He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, 33) and His kingdom will have no end.” 34) Mary said to the Angel: “How will this be, since I do not know the husband?” 35) And, answering, the Angel said to Her: “The Holy Spirit will come upon You, and the power of the Most High will overshadow You. Therefore, the Holy One that is born of You will be called the Son of God. 36) Here is Elizabeth, your relative, and she conceived a son in her old age, and she is already in her sixth month, called barren, 37) for with God no word will be powerless.” 38) Mary said: “Behold, the Servant of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word.” And the Angel departed from Her. 39) Mary rose up in those days and went with haste to the hill country, to the city of Judah, 40) and entered the house of Zechariah, and greeted Elizabeth. 41) And it came to pass that when Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, 42) and cried out with a loud voice and said: “Blessed are You among women, and blessed is the fruit of Your womb! 43) And where does it come from for me that the Mother of my Lord came to me? 44) For behold, when the voice of Your greeting reached my ears, the baby leaped joyfully in my womb. 45) And blessed is she who believed, for what was told you from the Lord will be accomplished.” 46) And Mary said: “My soul magnifies the Lord, 47) and my spirit rejoices in God, my salvation. 48) That He looked upon the humility of His Servant, for, behold, from now on all generations will call Me blessed. 49) For the Mighty One has made Me great, and holy is His name; 50) and His mercy from generation to generation is toward those who fear Him. 51) He created the power on His shoulder; scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. 52) He brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted the humble. 53) He filled those who were hungry with good things, and those who were rich he sent away empty-handed. 54) He took Israel His servant, remembering His mercy, 55) as He spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and his seed forever.” 56) Mary stayed with her about three months and returned to her home. 57) The time came for Elizabeth to give birth, and she gave birth to a son. 58) And her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had magnified His mercy over her, and they rejoiced over her. 59) And it came to pass on the eighth day: they came to circumcise the boy and call him, after the name of his father, Zechariah. 60) And, answering, his mother said: “Not so, but let him be called John.” 61) And they said to her: “There is no one in your family who is called by this name.” 62) And they asked his father by signs what he would like to call him. 63) And having demanded the tablet, he wrote, proclaiming: “John is his name.” And everyone was surprised. 64) Immediately his mouth and tongue were opened, and he spoke, blessing God. 65) And there was fear on all those living around them; and the rumor about all this spread throughout the entire hill country of Judea, 66) and everyone who heard it laid it on their hearts, saying: “Who do you think this child will be?!” For the hand of the Lord was with him. 67) And Zechariah his father was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied, saying: 68) “Blessed is the Lord God of Israel, for He has visited and made redemption for His people, 69) and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of His servant David, 70) as was proclaimed by the mouth of the saints who were of old, His prophets, 71) salvation from our enemies and from the hand of all those who hate us; 72) in order to show mercy to our fathers and remember His holy covenant, 73) the oath that He swore to Abraham our father, which He gave to us. 74) So that we, without fear, having been delivered from the hand of our enemies, may serve Him 75) in holiness and righteousness before Him all our days. 76) And you, youth, will be called a prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways, 77) to give the knowledge of salvation to His people, in the forgiveness of their sins, 78) according to the gracious mercy of our God, in which the East from above visited us, 79) to enlighten those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, to guide our feet on the path of peace.” 80) The youth grew and became stronger in spirit, and was in the deserts until the day of his appearance to Israel. 1) It happened in those days: a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that there should be a census throughout the entire universe. 2) This census was the first conducted by the ruler of Syria, Quirinius. 3) And everyone went to register, each to his own city. 4) Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, since he was from the house and family of David, 5) to enroll with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child. 6) It came to pass: while they were there, the days were fulfilled that she was about to give birth. 7) And she gave birth to her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling clothes, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. 8) And there were shepherds in the same country, watching and keeping watch over their flock by night. 9) And behold, the Angel of the Lord stood in the midst of them, and the clarity of God shone around them; and they were afraid with great fear. 10) And the Angel said to them: “Do not be afraid; I bring you good news of great joy, which will be to all the people: 11) For today a Savior, who is Christ the Lord, has been born to you in the city of David; 12) And this is a sign for you: you will find the Child wrapped in swaddling clothes and laid in a manger.” 13) And suddenly a multitude of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying: 14) “Glory to God in the highest; and on earth peace to people of good will!” 15) And it came to pass: when the angels departed from them into heaven, the shepherds said to each other: “Let us reach Bethlehem and look at this word that has come to pass, which the Lord has declared to us.” 16) And they went with haste, and found Mary and Joseph, and the child laid in a manger. 17) Having seen it, they understood the word that was announced to them about this Child. 18) And all who heard were amazed; namely, what was said to them by the shepherds. 19) Mary kept all these words, composing them in Her heart. 20) And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all that they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. 21) And after eight days had passed to circumcise the Child, His name was called Jesus, which was called by the Angel before He was conceived in the womb. 22) And after the days of Her purification according to the law of Moses were fulfilled, they brought Him to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord, 23) as it was prescribed in the law of the Lord, “that every male who opens a lie should be called holy to the Lord” (Exod. 13:2; Num. 8:16), 24) and to offer as a sacrificial gift, according to what was spoken in the law of the Lord, a couple turtle doves or two pigeon chicks. 25) And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and that man was a righteous and God-fearing man, looking forward to the consolation of Israel; and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26) And he received an answer from the Holy Spirit that he would not see his death until he first saw Christ the Lord. 27) And he came in the Spirit to the church. And when the parents brought the Child Jesus to do with Him according to the lawful custom, 28) and he took Him in his arms; and he blessed God and said: 29) “Now, O Master, you are releasing Your servant, according to Your word, in peace, 30) for mine eyes have seen Your salvation, 31) which You have prepared before the face of all nations, 32) a light for a revelation to the Gentiles and the glory of Your people Israel.” 33) And His “father” and Mother were surprised at what was said about Him. 34) And Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary, His Mother: “Behold, this One is appointed for the fall and for the rising of many in Israel and for a sign that cannot be resisted, 35) and a sword will pierce the soul of You, that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” 36) And Hannah the prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher, grew old in many days, and lived with her husband seven years from her virginity. 37) And she is a widow, [who lived] until she was eighty-four years old, who did not leave the church, serving with fasting and prayers day and night. 38) And at that very hour she came up and praised the Lord and spoke about Him to everyone who looked forward to the redemption of Israel. 39) And when they had completed everything according to the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their city of Nazareth. 40) The youth grew and became strong, filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon Him. 41) And His parents went annually to Jerusalem on the day of the celebration of Passover. 42) And when He was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast day. 43) And at the end of the days, when they were returning, the Child Jesus remained in Jerusalem; and His parents did not notice. 44) Believing that He was with fellow travelers, they walked a day's journey and looked for Him among relatives and acquaintances. 45) And not finding him, they returned to Jerusalem, looking for Him. 46) And it came to pass: after three days they found Him in the church, sitting in the midst of the teachers, listening to them, and asking them questions. 47) And all who heard Him marveled at His wisdom and His answers. 48) And when they saw it, they were surprised. And His Mother said to Him: “Son! Why did you do this to us? Behold, Your “father” and I, grieving, looked for You.” 49) And He said to them: “How is it that you sought Me? Did you not know that I must be involved in the things that belong to My Father?” 50) But they did not understand the word that was spoken to them. 51) And He went down with them and came to Nazareth; and was in obedience to them. And His Mother kept all these words in Her heart. 52) And Jesus increased in wisdom, and in age, and in favor with God and men. 1) In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, when Pontius Pilate was procurator in Judea, Herod was tetrarch in Galilee, Philip his brother was tetrarch in Ituraea and the Trachonite region, and Lysanias was tetrarch in Abilene, 2) under the high priests Annas and Caiaphas, the word of the Lord was spoken to John, the son of Zechariah, in the desert. 3) And he walked throughout the entire surrounding country of Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins, 4) as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah: “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: “Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight paths for Him; 5) let every valley be filled, and every mountain and hill be made low, and the crooked places be made straight, and the rough paths will be made smooth; 6) and all flesh will see the salvation of God” (Is. 40:3-5 LXX). 7) So, he said to the people who came to be baptized by him: “You brood of vipers! Who proved to you that you need to flee from the coming wrath? 8) Produce fruits worthy of repentance, and do not begin to say: “We have Abraham as our father.” For I tell you that God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham. 9) For even the ax lies at the root of the trees: every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.” 10) And the people asked him, saying: “What shall we do?” 11) Answering, he said to them: “Whoever has two coats, let him give to the poor, and whoever has food, do likewise.” 12) The publicans also came to be baptized, and said to him: “Teacher! And he ate nothing during those days, but after they were over he became hungry. 3) The devil said to Him: “If You are the Son of God, tell this stone that it may become bread.” 4) And Jesus answered him: “For it is written that man does not live by bread alone, but by every word of God” (Deut. 8:3). 5) And the devil took Him to a high mountain, showed Him all the kingdoms of the earthly circle in a moment of time, 6) and said to Him: “I will give you power over all of them and their glory, for it is devoted to me, and I give it to whomever I want; 7) Therefore, if You bow down before me, then everything will be Yours.” 8) And Jesus answered and said to him: “It is written: ‘Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him alone shalt thou serve’” (Deut. 6:16). 9) And he led Him to Jerusalem, and placed Him on the pinnacle of the church, and said to Him: “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here. 10) For it is written: “He will command his angels concerning you, that they may keep you; 11) and in their hands they will bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone” (Ps. 90:11-12). 12) And Jesus answered and said to him: “It is said: ‘Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God’” (Deut. 6:16). 13) And having finished every temptation, the devil departed from Him, even for a time. 14) And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee; and fame about Him spread throughout the surrounding country. 15) And He taught in their synagogues, and was magnified by them all. 16) And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and, as was his custom, he entered the synagogue on the Sabbath day and stood up to read. 17) And the book of the prophet Isaiah was given to Him. And as He unrolled the scroll, He found the place where it was written: 18) “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me; for which purpose He anointed Me, He sent Me to preach good news to the poor, to heal the brokenhearted, 19) to preach release to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who were oppressed, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord and the day of recompense” (Is. 61:1-2). 20) And when he had rolled up the scroll, he gave it to the servant, and sat down. And the eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21) He began to say to them: “For today this scripture has been fulfilled in your ears.” 22) And they all bore witness to Him, and marveled at the words of grace that proceeded from His mouth, and said, “Is not this the son of Joseph?” 23) He said to them: “Of course, you will tell Me this analogy: “Physician! Heal Yourself; do here, in Your fatherland, what we heard happened in Capernaum.” 24) He said: “Truly I say to you, no prophet was accepted in his own country. 25) Truly I say to you, there were many widows in the days of Elijah in Israel, when the heavens were shut up for three years and six months, so that there was a great famine throughout the whole earth, 26) and Elijah was not sent to any of them, but only to Zarephath of Sidon to a widow’s wife. 27) And there were many lepers in Israel under Elisha the prophet, and not one of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.” 28) And everyone in the synagogue was filled with rage when they heard this. 29) And they arose and drove Him out of the city, and led Him to the top of the mountain on which their city had been built, in order to overthrow Him. 30) He passed through the midst of them and departed. 31) And he went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and there he taught them on the Sabbath. 32) And they marveled at His teaching, for His word was with authority. 33) And in the synagogue there was a man who had an unclean demon, and he cried with a loud voice, 34) saying: “Leave it; what to us and to you, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know You, who You are, the Holy One of God.” 35) And Jesus rebuked him, saying: “Be silent and come out of him.” And when the demon had cast him down in the midst, he came out of him and did not harm him in any way. 36) And horror fell upon everyone, and they said among themselves: “What is this word with which He commands the unclean spirits with authority and power, and they come out?” 37) And the rumor about Him spread throughout all the surrounding places. 38) Jesus rose from the synagogue and entered Simon's house; Simonov's mother-in-law was overcome by a severe fever; and asked Him for her. 39) And standing over her, He rebuked the fever; and left her. And immediately getting up, she served them. 40) When the sun set, all those who were sick with various ailments brought them to Him. And He laid His hands on each of them and healed them. 41) Demons also came out from among many, exclaiming and saying: “Surely You are the Christ, the Son of God.” And forbidding them, he did not allow them to speak, for they knew that He was the Christ. 42) When the day came, He went out and went into a deserted place, and the crowds sought Him until they even came to Him, and they restrained Him so that He would not leave them. 43) He said to them: “And it is fitting for Me to preach the Kingdom of God to other cities, for for this purpose I was sent.” 44) And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee. 1) It came to pass that when the people pressed towards Him to hear the word of God, He stood by the lake of Gennesaret. 2) And He saw two ships standing on the lake; the fishermen went and washed their nets. 3) Having entered one ship, which was Simonov, He asked him to sail a little from the earth. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. 4) When he had stopped speaking, he said to Simon: “Sail out into the deep, and let down your nets for a catch.” 5) And Simon answered and said to Him: “Master! Having labored all night, we have not caught anything, but at Your word I will let down the net.” 6) And when they did this, they caught a great abundance of fish, even their net was broken. 7) And they gave a sign to the comrades who were on the other ship to come and help them. And they came and filled both ships, so that they almost sank. 8) When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at the knees of Jesus and said: “Get away from me! Because I am a sinful man, Lord.” 9) For stupor came over him and all who were with him because of the fish they had caught; 10) in like manner also James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were companions of Simon. And Jesus said to Simon: “Do not be afraid; From now on you will catch people.” 11) And they pulled the ships ashore, leaving everything behind, and followed Him. 12) And it came to pass, when He was in a certain city, and behold, a man was covered with leprosy, and when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face and prayed to Him, saying: “Lord! If you want, you can cleanse me.” 13) And stretching out his hand, He touched him, saying: “I want to, be clean.” And immediately the leprosy left him. 14) And He commanded him not to tell anyone, but: “Go, show yourself to the priest and offer [the sacrifice] for your cleansing, as Moses commanded (see Lev. 14:2-32), as a testimony to them.” 15) But the rumor about Him spread even more, and numerous crowds flocked to listen and be healed of their ailments. 16) He went into the desert and prayed. 17) And it came to pass one day, and He sat teaching. And the Pharisees and teachers of the law sat, having come from all the villages of Galilee and Judea, and from Jerusalem, and the power of the Lord appeared to heal them. 18) And behold, the men brought a man who was paralyzed on a bed, and they tried to carry him in and lay him before Him. 19) And not finding a way to carry him, because of the crowd, they climbed onto the roof and lowered him and his bed through the tiles into the middle in front of Him. 20) When He saw their faith, He said: “Man, your sins are forgiven you.” 21) And the scribes and Pharisees began to reason, saying: “Who is this that speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins except God alone?” 22) When Jesus understood their thoughts, he answered and said: “What are you thinking in your hearts? 23) Which is easier to say: “Your sins are forgiven,” or to say: “Rise and walk?” 24) But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,” He said to the paralytic: “I say to you, get up, take up your bed and go to your house.” 25) And he immediately stood up before them, took up the bed on which he was lying, and went to his house, magnifying God. 26) And numbness seized everyone, and they magnified God. Jesus sent him away, saying: 39) “Return to your house and tell us what God has done for you.” And he went throughout the whole city, preaching what Jesus had done for him. 40) It came to pass, when Jesus returned, that the people received Him, for they were all who waited for Him. 41) And behold, there came a man named Jairus, who was the ruler of the synagogue; and fell at the feet of Jesus, asking Him to come into his house, 42) because he had one daughter, about twelve years old, and she was dying. And it happened that as He walked, the people crowded around Him. 43) And there was a certain woman who suffered from bleeding for twelve years, who, having spent all her property on doctors, could not be cured by anyone, 44) she came up from behind and touched the fringe of His robe; and immediately her bleeding stopped. 45) And Jesus said: “Who is it that touched Me?!” When everyone denied, Peter and those with Him said: “Master, the people surround You and press in, and You say: “Who touched Me?” 46) And Jesus said: “Someone touched Me, for I know that power has gone out from Me.” 47) Seeing that she did not hide herself, the woman came up with trembling and fell down before Him, and for what reason she touched Him, she declared before all the people, and how she was immediately healed. 48) And He said to her: “Daughter! But He said, “Don’t cry; The girl is not dead, but she is sleeping.” 53) And they laughed at Him, knowing that she had died. 54) He, taking her hand, exclaimed, saying: “Maiden, stand up!” 55) And her spirit returned; and she immediately rebelled. I beg You to look upon my son, for he is the only one I have: 39) and behold, the spirit seizes him, and he suddenly cries out, and throws him down and crushes him, so that he emits foam; and, tormenting him, forcibly retreats from him. 40) And I asked Your disciples to drive him out, and they could not.” 41) Jesus answered and said: “O faithless and perverse generation! How long will I be with you and endure you? Bring your son here." 42) As he walked, the demon overthrew him and crushed him. 43) And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the boy, and gave him to his father. 44) Everyone was amazed at the greatness of God; and when everyone marveled at all that Jesus did, He said to His disciples: “Put these words into your hearts: for the Son of Man will be delivered into the hands of men.” 45) But they did not understand this word, and it was hidden from them, so that they did not comprehend it, and were afraid to ask Him about this word. 46) A thought came to them: which of them would be greater? 47) And Jesus, seeing the thoughts of their hearts, took the child and set him before Him, 48) and said to them: “Whoever receives this child in My name receives Me; and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me. For whoever is least among you is greatest.” 49) Answering, John said: “Master! We saw someone casting out demons in Your name, and we rebuked him, for he did not walk with us.” 50) And Jesus said to him: “Do not forbid, for whoever is not against you is for you.” 51) Now, when the days [before] His capture were ending, He firmly set His face to go to Jerusalem. 52) And He sent messengers before His face; and they went and entered the Samaritan city to make preparations for Him. 53) And they did not receive Him, for His face was like that of one going to Jerusalem. 54) When His disciples, James and John, saw [this], they said: “Lord! Do you want us to tell fire to come down from heaven and destroy them?” 55) And turning [to them], he rebuked them, saying: “You do not know what kind of spirit you are. 56) The Son of Man came not to destroy the souls of men, but to save.” And they went to another village. 57) It happened that while they were on their way, someone said to Him: “I will follow You wherever You go.” 58) Jesus said to him: “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; But the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” 59) He said to another: “Follow Me.” He said: “Lord! Let me first go and bury my father.” 60) And Jesus said to him: “Let the dead bury their dead, but you go and preach the kingdom of God.” 61) And the other said: “I will follow You, Lord! But let me tell my family first.” 62) Jesus said to him: “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.” 1) After this, the Lord appointed seventy-two others [disciples], and sent them two by two before His face into every city and place where He Himself went. 2) And he said to them: “The harvest is abundant, but the laborers are few. So, pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. 3) Go! Behold, I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. 4) Do not take a bag, a scrip, or shoes, and do not greet anyone on the road. 5) Whatever house you enter, first say: “Peace to this house”; 6) and if the son of peace is there, then your peace will rest on him, but if not, it will return to you. 7) Stay in the same house, eat and drink whatever they have, for the worker is worthy of his reward. Woe to you, Bethsaida! Whoever rejects Me rejects Him who sent Me.” 17) The seventy-two [disciples] returned with joy, saying: “Lord! Even demons obey us in Your name.” 18) And he said to them: “I saw Satan like lightning falling from heaven. 19) Behold, I have given you power to tread on snakes and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will harm you. 20) However, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits obey you, but rejoice in the fact that your names are written in heaven.” 21) At that hour Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said: “I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and have revealed them to babes. Hey, Father! For this was pleasing to You. 22) All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and to whom the Son wants to reveal it.” 23) And turning to His disciples, He said: “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. 24) For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see and did not see, and to hear what you hear and did not hear.” 25) And behold, one lawyer stood up, tempting Him and saying: “Teacher! What must I do to inherit eternal life?” 26) He said to him: “What is written in the law? How do you read? 27) He answered and said: “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind, and thy neighbor as thyself” (Deut. 6:5; Lev. 19:18). 28) And he said to him: “You answered correctly; do this and you will live.” 29) He, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus: “Who is my neighbor?” 30) Jesus, supporting [the conversation], said: “A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho and came across robbers, who even took off his clothes, and after inflicting wounds on him, they left, leaving him half dead. 31) By chance, a certain priest was walking along the same road and, seeing him, passed by. 32) In like manner the Levite, when he was at the place and saw him, passed by. 33) A Samaritan, walking along the way, passed next to him and, seeing him, was touched by mercy. 34) And he drew near and bandaged his wounds, pouring in oil and wine; and, setting him on his beast of burden, brought him to the inn and took care of him. 35) And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, and said: “Take care of him; and if you spend anything more, when I return, I will give it back to you.” 36) Which of these three, as you see, was a neighbor to the one who fell among the robbers?” 37) And he said: “Who showed him mercy.” And Jesus said to him: “Go and do likewise.” 38) It came to pass, as he walked, that he came to a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha received Him into her house; 39) and there was [her] sister named Mary, who, even sitting at the feet of Jesus, listened to His word. 40) Martha was busy with frequent ministry. She stood up and said: “Lord! Don't you need my sister to leave me alone to serve? Tell her to help me." 41) And answering, the Lord said to her: “Martha! Marfa! You care and fuss about many things, 42) when one thing is necessary; Mary chose the good part, which will not be taken away from her.” 1) And it happened when He was praying in a certain place, when he stopped, one of His disciples said to Him: “Lord! Teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.” 2) And he said to them: “When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. 3) Give us this day our daily bread. 4) And forgive us our sins, for we also forgive every debtor. And do not lead us into temptation.” 5) And he said to them: “One of you has a friend and will come to him at midnight and say to him: “Friend! lend me three loaves of bread, 6) for my friend came to me from the road, and I have nothing to offer him; 7) and he, answering from the inside, will say to him: “Don’t bother me, the doors are already locked, and my children are with me on the bed; I can’t get up and give it to you.” 8) If he continues to knock, I tell you, if he does not get up and give to him, since he is his friend, then, out of his importunity, he will get up and give to him as much as he needs. 9) And I say to you: ask, and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10) For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 11) Which one of you asks his father for bread, and he gives him a stone? Or - fish, will he really give him a snake instead of a fish? 12) Or, if he asks for an egg, will he really give him a scorpion? 13) If you, then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the good spirit to those who ask Him.” 14) And He cast out the demon, but he was dumb. And when he cast out the demon, the dumb man spoke; and the people were surprised. 15) Some of them said: “By Beelzebub, the prince of demons, He casts out demons.” 16) And others, tempting, demanded signs from heaven from Him. 17) When he saw their thoughts, he said to them: “Every kingdom divided against itself will be desolate, and house upon house will fall. 18) If Satan is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that I cast out demons by Beelzebub. 19) If I cast out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. 20) If I cast out demons with the finger of God, of course the Kingdom of God has come to you. 21) When a strong man guards his courtyard with weapons, his property is in peace. 22) If his strongest, having created an invasion, defeats him, he will take all his weapons that he hoped for and distribute what was stolen from him. 23) He who is not with Me is against Me; and whoever does not gather with Me scatters. 24) When the unclean spirit leaves a person, he walks through dry places, looking for rest, and, not finding it, says: “I will return to my house from where I came.” 25) And when he came, he found it swept and decorated. 26) Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more evil than himself, and they enter and live there, and the last thing for that person is worse than the first.” 27) Now, as He was saying this, one woman from among the people raised her voice and said to Him: “Blessed is the womb that bore You, and the breasts that You sucked!” 28) And He said: “Even blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it.” 29) When a large crowd began to gather, He began to say: “This generation is an evil generation, it seeks a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 30) For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. 31) The Queen of the South will rise up in judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, there is more Solomon here. 32) The men of Nineveh will rise up in judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented from the preaching of Jonah, and behold, there is more Jonah here. 33) No one, having lit a candle, puts it in a secret place, not under a bucket, but on a candlestick, so that those who enter may see the light. 34) The lamp of the body is your eye. If your eye is simple, then your whole body will be light; if it is bad, then your body will be dark. 35) So, look: is not the light that is in you darkness? 36) If your body is all light, not having a single dark part, everything will be light; and as if a lamp will illuminate you with radiance.” 37) And while He was speaking, a certain Pharisee asked Him to dine with him. And when He came, He lay down. 38) The Pharisee began to speak, pondering within himself why He was unwashed before dinner. 39) And the Lord said to him: “Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and the platter, but your insides are full of robbery and iniquity. 40) Fools! Was it not the same One who created the external, who also created the internal? 41) Although all that remains for you is: give alms, and, behold, everything will be clean for you. 42) But woe to you, Pharisees, because you tithe mint, and rue, and all kinds of vegetables, and neglect the judgment and love of God: this should have been done, and not forsaken. 43) Woe to you Pharisees, because you love presiding in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplace. 44) Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for you are like tombs that are unnoticed, and people walking from above do not know.” 45) Answering, one of the lawyers said to Him: “Teacher! By saying this, You are causing us offense too.” 46) But He said: “And woe to you lawyers, for you impose unbearable burdens on people, but you yourself do not even touch them with one finger. 47) Woe to you for building tombs for the prophets; your fathers killed them. 48) Truly you testify that you agree with the deeds of your fathers, because they killed them [the prophets], but you build tombs for them. 49) Therefore, the wisdom of God said: “I will send prophets and apostles to them, and of them [some] will be killed, and [others] will be persecuted, 50) that the blood of all the prophets, shed from the foundation of the world, may be required from this generation - 51) from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the church.” She, I tell you, will be required of this generation. 52) Woe to you lawyers, because you took the key of knowledge; you yourselves did not enter, and you forbade those who entered.” 53) When He told them this, the scribes and Pharisees began to have great anger towards Him, and to force His mouth on many occasions. e. to force answers from Him to many things/, 54) setting traps for Him, and seeking to catch something from His mouth in order to accuse Him. 1) When a large crowd stood around Him, so that they crowded each other, He began to say to His disciples: “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. 2) There is nothing hidden that would not be revealed, nor hidden that would not be known. 3) In this regard, what you said in the dark, let it be said in the light; and what has been spoken in ear in the halls shall be preached on the housetops. 4) I say to you, My friends: do not be afraid of those who kill the body and then are unable to do anything more. 5) I will tell you whom to fear: fear the one who, after killing, has the power to cast him into Gehenna: I tell you, fear him. 6) Are not five sparrows sold for dupondium [dipundio], and not one of them is forgotten by God? 7) But all the hairs of your head are numbered. So, do not be afraid: you are worth more than many sparrows. 8) But I say to you, whoever confesses Me before men, the Son of Man will also confess him before the angels of God; 9) whoever denies Me before men will be rejected before the angels of God. 10) And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. 11) When they bring you to the synagogues, to the rulers and powers, do not worry about how or what to answer or what to say. 12) For the Holy Spirit will teach you at that very hour what you should say.” 13) One of the people said: “Teacher! Tell my brother to share the inheritance with me.” 14) And He said to him: “Man, who made Me a judge or a divider over you?” 15) And he said to them: “Take heed and beware of all covetousness, for a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” 16) And he told them a parable, saying: “A certain rich man’s field bore abundant fruit; 17) and he reasoned with himself, saying: “What should I do, since I have no place where I can gather my fruits?” 18) And he said: “This I will do: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will gather everything that has been born for me and my goods, 19) and I will say to my soul: “Soul! Much goodness lies with you for many years: rest, eat, drink, feast.” 20) God said to him: “Fool! This night your soul will be taken from you; and what you have prepared, whose will it be?” 21) This is what happens to those who store up treasures for themselves and are not rich in God.” 22) And he said to his disciples: “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will wear. 23) Life is more than food, and the body is more than clothing. 24) Look at the ravens: they neither sow nor reap; They have neither storehouses nor granaries, and God feeds them. How much more valuable are you than them? 25) Which of you, after thinking, can add [at least] one cubit to his height? 26) So, if you cannot do even the slightest thing, why do you worry about the rest? 27) Look at the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; I tell you that Solomon in all his glory was not dressed like one of these. 28) If God clothes the hay in the field today, but tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more so than you, O you of little faith? 29) And do not seek what you can eat or what you can drink, and do not exalt yourself highly, 30) because the pagans of the world seek all these things. But your Father knows that you need this. 31) However, seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. 32) Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s pleasure to give you the kingdom. 33) Sell what you have and give alms. Make for yourself containers that do not wear out, a treasure that does not fail in heaven, where no thief approaches and where moth does not spoil. 34) For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 35) Let your loins be girded and the lamps burning in your hands, 36) and you are like people waiting for their master to return from marriage, so that when he comes and knocks, you may immediately open it to him. 37) Blessed are those servants whom the master finds awake when he comes; Truly I say to you, he will gird himself, and will order them, and will come and serve them. 38) And if he comes in the second watch, and in the third watch, and finds [them] thus, blessed are those servants. 39) Know this, that if the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief would come, he would have been awake and would not have allowed his house to be broken into. 40) And you be ready, for at an hour you do not think, the Son of Man will come.” 41) Peter also said: “Lord! Are you speaking this parable to us, or to everyone?” 42) The Lord said: “Who do you think is a faithful and prudent steward, whom the master set over his family to distribute to them a measure of wheat in due time? 43) Blessed is that servant whom his master, when he comes, finds doing this. 44) Truly I say to you, he will put him over everything that he has. 45) If that slave says in his heart: “My master is delaying in coming,” and begins to beat his male and female slaves, and eat, drink, and get drunk, 46) the master of that slave will come on a day on which he does not expect, and at an hour on which he does not think, and will cut him up, and subject him to the same fate as the infidels. 47) That servant who knew the will of his master, and did not prepare, and did not do according to his will, will be beaten a lot; 48) whoever did not know and did something worthy of punishment will receive less punishment. And from everyone to whom much has been given, much will be demanded of him, and to whom much has been entrusted, more will be asked of him. 49) I came to bring down fire on the earth, and what would I want if not for it to burn? 50) I must be baptized with baptism; and how distressed I am until this happens! 51) Do you think that I came to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division; 52) for from now on five in one house will be divided, three against two, and two against three 53) divided: father against son, and son against his father; mother against daughter, and daughter against mother; mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law, and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.” 54) He also said to the people: “When you see a cloud rising from the west, immediately say: “A thunderstorm is coming,” and so it happens; 55) and when the Austrian (south wind) blows, say: “For there will be heat,” and it does. 56) Hypocrites! You know how to recognize the face of the earth and the sky, how can you not recognize this time? 57) Why don’t you judge by yourselves what is righteous? 58) When you go with your rival to the prince, take action on the way to free yourself from him, so that he does not bring you to the judge, and the judge does not hand you over to the torturer, and the torturer does not throw you into prison. 59) I tell you: you will not leave there until you give even the last mite /smallest coin/.” 1) Some came to Him at [this] time, proclaiming about the Galileans, whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. 2) And answering, He said to them: “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the Galileans, that they suffered so much? 3) No, I tell you, but if you do not repent, you will all perish in the same way. 4) Like those eighteen people on whom the tower of Siloam fell and killed them, do you think that they were greater debtors than all those living in Jerusalem? 5) No, I tell you, but if you do not repent, you will all perish in the same way.” 6) He also said this simile: “A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and came looking for fruit on it, and did not find it; 7) He said to the vinedresser: “Behold, this is the third year in which I come looking for fruit on this fig tree and do not find it; So, cut it down: why does it occupy the land?” 8) And he answered and said to him: “Sir, leave it this year, until I dig it up and cover it with manure, 9) and see if it bears fruit; if not, then in the future you will cut it down.” 10) He taught them in the synagogue on the Sabbath. 11) And, behold, [there was] a woman who had the spirit of infirmity for eighteen years: and she was bent over, and could not straighten up at all. 12) When Jesus saw her, he called her to Him and said to her: “Woman! You are freed from your illness." 13) And he laid his hands on her, and she immediately straightened up and glorified God. 14) The ruler of the synagogue, indignant that Jesus healed on the Sabbath, answered the people: “There are six days on which you must do it; Therefore, come on those days and you will be healed, and not on the Sabbath day.” 15) Answering him, the Lord said: “Hypocrites! Doesn't each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or donkey from the manger and lead him to the watering hole? 16) Should not this daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound for these eighteen years, have been freed from these bonds on the Sabbath day?” 17) And when He said this, all those who opposed Him blushed; and all the people rejoiced over everything that was gloriously accomplished by Him. 18) So He said: “What is the Kingdom of God like, and to what will I liken it? 19) It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and threw in his garden; and it grew and became a great tree, and the birds of the air took refuge in its branches.” 20) And again he said: “To what will I compare the Kingdom of God? 21) It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of flour until it was all leavened.” 22) And he passed through cities and villages, teaching, and making his way to Jerusalem. 23) Someone said to Him: “Lord! Are there really few people being saved? He said to them: 24) “Strive to enter through the strait gate, for, I tell you, many will seek to enter and will not be able to. 25) When the owner of the house comes in and closes the doors, you begin to stand outside and knock on the doors, saying: “Lord! God! Open to us"; - and He, answering, will say to you: “I don’t know you, where you come from.” 26) Then you will begin to say: “We ate and drank before You, and You taught in our streets.” 27) And He will say to you: “I don’t know you where you come from; Depart from Me, all workers of iniquity." 28) There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the Kingdom of God, but you are driven out. 29) And they will come from the east and the west, and Aquilon, and Austrus (from the north and south wind), and will lie down in the Kingdom of God. 30) And behold, these are the last who will be first, and these are the first who will be last.” 31) That day some of the Pharisees came, saying to Him: “Come out and get away from here, for Herod wants to kill You.” 32) And he said to them: “Go and tell that fox: Behold, I cast out demons and perform healings today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will complete them. 33) However, I must walk today, tomorrow and the next day, because it does not happen that a prophet perishes outside of Jerusalem. 34) Jerusalem! Jerusalem! Who kills the prophets and stones those sent to you! How often have I wanted to gather your children together like a bird gathers its chicks under its wings, and you did not want to? 35) Behold, your house is left to you empty. But I tell you that you will not see Me until [the time] comes when you say: “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!” 1) And it happened when Jesus entered the house of one of the princes of the Pharisees on the Sabbath to eat bread, and they watched Him. 2) And behold, a man suffering from dropsy was before Him. 3) And Jesus answered and asked the lawyers and Pharisees: “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?” 4) And they were silent. He touched him, healed him and released him. 5) And answering them, he said: “[If] one of you’s donkey or ox falls into a well, will he not immediately pull it out on the Sabbath day?” 6) And they could not answer Him to this. 7) He spoke a parable to those invited, noticing how [those invited] chose the first places, saying to them: 8) “When you are invited to a marriage, do not lie in the first place, lest one of those invited by him be more honorable than you. 9) And, having approached, calling you and him, he would not have said to you: “Make room for him”; - and then, blushing, you begin to take last place. 10) But when you are called, come and lie down in the last place, so that when the one who invited you approaches, he will say to you: “Friend! Rise higher"; - then you will have glory before those reclining together; 11) For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” 12) He also said to the one who invited Him: “When you make lunch or dinner, do not invite your friends, nor your brothers, nor relatives, nor rich neighbors, so that they do not invite you in return, and you would not be rewarded. 13) But when you make a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame and the blind, 14) and you will be blessed that they have nothing with which to repay you, for you will be rewarded at the resurrection of the righteous.” 15) Hearing this, one of those reclining together said to Him: “Blessed is he who eats bread in the Kingdom of God!” 16) And He said to him: “One man made a large supper and invited many, 17) and sent his servant at the hour of supper to tell those invited to go, for everything was already ready. 18) And everyone began to apologize as one. The first one said to him: “I have bought an estate, and I must go and see it; I beg you, forgive me." 19) Another said: “I bought five teams of oxen and am going to test them; I beg you, forgive me." 20) And another said: “I took a wife, and therefore I cannot come.” 21) And the servant returned and told this to his master. Then, angry, the owner of the house said to his servant: “Go quickly through the streets and alleys of the city; Bring the poor, the maimed, the lame, and the blind here.” 22) And the servant said: “Master! It’s done as you ordered, and there’s still room.” 23) And the master said to the servant: “Go out into the roads and hedges and make them come in, so that my house may be filled.” 24) I tell you that none of those invited men will taste my supper.” 25) And large crowds walked with Him; and He turned and said to them: 26) “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, and also his own life, he cannot be My disciple. 27) And whoever does not bear his cross and does not follow Me cannot be My disciple. 28) For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has what it takes to complete it, 29) lest, when he has laid the foundation and is not able to complete it, all who see it begin to laugh at him, 30) saying: “For this man began to build and was not able to finish?” 31) Or what king, coming to wage war against another king, does not first sit down and consider whether he can with ten thousand resist the one coming against him with twenty thousand? 32) Otherwise, while he is still far away, he sends an embassy and asks him for peace terms. 33) So, anyone of you who does not renounce everything that he has cannot be My disciple. 34) Salt is good; If the salt is desalinated, how will it acquire taste? 35) It is not suitable for soil or manure; but it's thrown out. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!” 1) All the publicans and sinners drew near to Him to listen to Him. 2) And the Pharisees and scribes grumbled, saying: “For He receives sinners and eats with them.” 3) And He spoke this parable to them, saying: 4) “Which man among you, having a hundred sheep and losing one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the lost one until he finds it? 5) And when he finds her, he takes her on his shoulders, rejoicing, 6) and, having come home, he calls his friends and neighbors, saying to them: “Rejoice with me: I have found my sheep that was lost.” 7) I tell you that there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who do not need to repent. 8) Or what woman who has ten drachmas, if she loses one drachma, does not light candles and sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it? 9) And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors, saying: “Rejoice with me, for I have found the drachma that I lost.” 10) Thus, I tell you, there will be joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” 11) He said: “A certain man had two sons; 12) and the youngest of them said to his father: “Father! Give me the next part of the fortune." And [the father] divided their fortune. 13) And after a few days, the younger son, having gathered everything, went away to a far side and there squandered his wealth, living fornication. 14) And after he had completely squandered everything, a great famine arose in that country, and he began to be in need. 15) And he went and accosted one of the citizens of that country, and he sent him to his estate to tend pigs. 16) And he wanted to fill his belly with the horns that the pigs ate, but no one gave it to him. 17) Having come to his senses, he said: “How many hired servants in my father’s house have an abundance of bread, but here I am dying of hunger. 18) I will get up and go to my father and say to him: “Father! I have sinned against heaven and before you, 19) I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me one of your hired servants." 20) And he got up and went to his father. While he was still far away, his father saw him and was moved by mercy; and, running, fell on his neck and kissed him. 21) And the son said to him: “Father! I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.” 22) The father said to his servants: “Quickly bring the first robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and shoes on his feet; 23) and bring the fatted calf and kill it; and let's eat and feast! 24) For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.” And they began to feast. 25) Now his eldest son was in the field; and when he came and approached the house, he heard music and dancing; 26) and called one of the servants and asked what it was. 27) He said to him: “Your brother came, and your father killed the fatted calf, for he received it healthy.” 28) He became angry and did not want to enter. Give an account of your management, for you can no longer manage.” 3) The steward said to himself: “What should I do? However, when the Son of Man comes, do you think he will find faith on earth?” 9) He also spoke this parable to some who trusted in themselves as righteous, and humiliated others: 10) “Two men went up to the church to pray: one was a Pharisee, and the other was a tax collector. 11) The Pharisee stood and prayed to himself like this: “God! I thank You that I am not like other people, robbers, unrighteous, adulterers, like this publican: 12) I fast twice a week, I give a tenth of all that I have.” 13) But the publican, standing at a distance, did not even want to raise his eyes to heaven; but beat himself on the chest, saying: “God, be merciful to me, a sinner!” 14) I tell you that this one went down to his house justified more than the other: for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.” 15) They brought babies to Him so that He could touch them. When the disciples saw it, they rebuked them. 16) Jesus called them together and said: “Suffer the little children to come to Me and do not forbid them, for to such is the kingdom of God. 17) Truly I say to you, anyone who does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it.” 18) And a certain prince asked Him, saying: “Good Teacher! What must I do to inherit eternal life?” 19) Jesus said to him: “Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone. 20) You know the commandments: do not kill, do not commit adultery, do not commit theft, do not bear false witness, honor your father and your mother.” 21) He said: “I have kept all this from my youth.” 22) When Jesus heard this, he said to him: “You still lack one thing: sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” 23) When he heard this, he was saddened, because he was very rich. 24) Seeing that he became sad, Jesus said: “How difficult it is for those who have money to enter the Kingdom of God! 25) For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” 26) And those who heard said: “Who can be saved?” 27) He said to them: “What is impossible with men is possible with God.” 28) Peter said: “Behold, we have left everything and followed You.” 29) He said to them: “Truly I say to you, there is no one who has left home, or parents, or brothers, or sisters, or wife, or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, 30) and will not receive much more in this time, and in the age to come, eternal life.” 31) Jesus took His twelve disciples and said to them: “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written through the prophets about the Son of Man will be fulfilled, 32) for they will deliver Him to the Gentiles, and they will mock [Him], and they will scourge [Him], and they will spit on [Him], 33) and after the scourging they will kill Him: and on the third day He will rise again.” 34) But they did not understand any of this; and the word was hidden from them, and they did not understand what was said. 35) It came to pass, as He approached Jericho, that a blind man sat by the road, begging. 36) And when the people passing by heard it, they asked what it was. 37) They told him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by. 38) And he cried out, saying: “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” 39) And those who walked in front kept him silent; he shouted even louder: “Son of David! Have mercy on me." 40) Jesus stopped and ordered him to be brought to Himself. And when he approached Him, he asked him, 41) saying: “What do you want from Me?” And he said: “Lord, that [I] may receive my sight.” 42) And Jesus said to him: “Look! Your faith saved you." 43) And he immediately received his sight and followed Him, magnifying God. And when all the people saw it, they gave praise to God. 1) And he entered and passed through Jericho. 2) And behold, a man named Zacchaeus, and this one was the chief of tax collectors, and he was rich himself; 3) and sought to see Jesus who He was, but could not follow the people, for he was small in stature. 4) And, running ahead, he climbed a mulberry tree to see Him, for He was passing by. 5) And when he came to this place, Jesus, looking up, saw him and said to him: “Zacchaeus, come down quickly, for today I must remain in your house.” 6) And he hastened and came down and received Him with joy. 7) And when everyone saw it, they murmured, saying that He was staying with a sinful man. 8) Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord: “Behold, half of my property, Lord, I will give to the poor, and if I have deceived anyone of anything, I will repay him fourfold.” 9) Jesus said to him: “For today the salvation of this house is accomplished, since he also is a son of Abraham, 10) for the Son of Man came to seek and to save that which was lost.” 11) When they heard this, He added a parable; because He was near Jerusalem, and because they thought that the Kingdom of God would soon be revealed. 12) So he said: “A certain noble man went to a distant country in order to receive a kingdom for himself and return; 13) Calling ten of his servants, he gave them ten minas and said to them: “Use them until I return.” 14) His citizens hated him; and sent an embassy after him, saying: “We don’t want this one to reign over us.” 15) And it came to pass when he returned, having received the kingdom; and ordered to call [to himself] the slaves to whom he had given money, in order to find out who had acquired how much. 16) The first came, saying: “Sir! Your mine brought ten mines.” 17) And he said to him: “Well done, good servant! Because you have been faithful in small things, you will have power over ten cities.” 18) And another came, saying: “Sir! Your mine brought five mines.” 19) He also said to this one: “And you shall be over five cities.” 20) And another came, saying: “Sir! And they threw their garments on the colt and set Jesus on it. 36) And as He rode, they spread their clothes along the way. 37) And when He approached the descent from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of disciples began to praise God with joy and loud voices for all the powers (miracles) they had seen, 38) saying: “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” 39) And some Pharisees from the crowd said to Him: “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.” 40) He said to them: “I tell you that if they remain silent, the stones will cry out.” 41) And when he approached, looking at the city, he wept for it, saying: 42) “Oh, if only you, even in this day of yours, knew what [leads] to your peace! Now [that] is hidden from your eyes, 43) for the days will come upon you when your enemies will surround you with a rampart, and surround you, and press you in on every side, 44) and will cast you and your children who are within you to the ground, and will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.” 45) And entering the church, he began to drive out those who were selling and buying in it, 46) saying to them: “It is written: “For my house is a house of prayer,” but you have made it a den of thieves” (Is. 56:7; Jer. 7:11). 47) And he taught every day in the church. The chief priests and the scribes and the elders of the people sought to destroy Him, 48) and did not find anything to do with Him. For all the people were troubled when they heard Him. 1) And it came to pass, on one of those days, when He was teaching the people in the church and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and scribes and the elders gathered together, 2) and said, saying to Him: “Tell us, by what authority are You doing this, or who gave You this authority?” 3) Jesus answered and said to them: “I will also ask you one word. Tell Me: 4) Was John’s baptism from heaven, or from men?” 5) And they reasoned among themselves, saying: “After all, if we say: “From heaven,” he will say: “Why didn’t you believe him?” - 6) if we say: “From men,” all the people will stone us, for they are sure that John is a prophet.” 7) And they answered that they don’t know where. 8) And Jesus said to them: “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.” 9) He began to speak this parable to the people: “A man planted a vineyard and leased it to the colonists, but he himself went away for a long time; 10) and in [his] time he sent a slave to the farmers, so that they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. Having killed whom, [the winegrowers] sent away with nothing. 11) And in addition he sent them another slave; They beat this one too and, having insulted him, sent him away empty-handed. 12) And in addition he sent a third; They also wounded him and kicked him out. 13) The lord of the vineyard said: “What should I do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps, seeing him, they will honor [him].” 14) Whom they saw, the columns reasoned among themselves, saying: “This is the heir; Let’s kill him so that the inheritance will be ours.” 15) And they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What will the lord of the vineyard do with them? 16) He will come and destroy those colonists and give the vineyard to others.” When they heard this, they said to Him: “Let it not be!” 17) He, looking at them, said: “What does this written mean: “The stone that the builders rejected, this has become the head of the corner” (Ps. 117:22)? 18) Anyone who falls on that stone will be broken, and whoever it falls on will be crushed.” 19) And the chief priests and scribes sought to lay hands on Him at that hour, but they were afraid of the people, for they understood that He had spoken this parable about them. 20) And having established surveillance, they sent spies who pretended to be righteous in order to catch Him in some word, in order to betray Him to the authorities and the authority of the ruler. 21) And they asked Him, saying: “Teacher! We know that You speak and teach correctly and are not partial, but teach in truth the way of God; 22) Is it permissible for us to give tribute to Caesar, or not?” 23) Realizing their wickedness, He said to them: “Why are you tempting Me? 24) Show Me the denarius: whose image and inscription is on it? They answered and said to Him, “Caesar’s.” 25) And he said to them: “Therefore, render what is Caesar’s to Caesar, and what is God’s to God.” 26) And they could not catch Him in His word before the people, and, amazed at His answer, they fell silent. 27) Some of the Sadducees, who deny that there is a resurrection, came and asked Him, 28) saying: “Teacher! Moses wrote to us: “If anyone’s brother dies, having a wife, and he also dies childless, let his brother take his wife, and let him raise up seed for his brother” (Deut. 25:5). 29) So there were seven brothers, and the first took a wife and died childless. 30) And the next one took her, and he died childless. 31) And the third took her; in like manner all seven also left no seed, and died. 32) Last of all, the wife died. 33) So, at the resurrection, which of them will she be the wife of, for all seven had her as a wife?” 34) And Jesus said to them: “The children of this age marry and are given in marriage; 35) those who are worthy to reach that age and the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor give in marriage, 36) for they can no longer die, they are equal to the Angels and are the sons of God, for they are the children of the resurrection. 37) And Moses showed that the dead will rise again at the bush when he called the Lord “the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob” (Ex. 3:6). 38) God is not the dead, but the living, for to Him all are alive.” 39) Answering, some of the scribes said to Him: “Teacher! You said it well." 40) And they no longer dared to ask Him anything. 41) He said to them: “How do they say that Christ is the Son of David? 42) And David himself says in the book of Psalms: “The Lord said to my Lord: Sit at My right hand, 43) until I make Your enemies Your footstool” (Ps. 109:1). 44) So David calls Him Lord; and how is He his Son?” 45) When all the people were listening to Him, He said to His disciples: 46) “Beware of the scribes, who love to walk in long robes and love greetings in the marketplaces, presiding in the synagogues and presiding over suppers, 47) who consume the houses of widows, pretending to pray for a long time; they will receive greater condemnation.” 1) Looking up, He saw the rich throwing their gifts into the treasury. 2) I also saw one poor widow who put two copper mites there. 3) And he said: “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has given up more than everything; 4) for all of them, out of their abundance, threw in gifts to God, but this one, out of her lack, put in all her food that she had.” 5) And when some said of the church that it was adorned with good stones and inlays, He said: 6) “The days will come in which from what you see here there will not be left one stone upon another that will not be destroyed.” 7) They asked Him, saying: “Master! When will this be? And what will be the sign when this begins? 8) He said: “Take heed that you are not deceived, for many will come in My name, saying, “It is I,” and “The time is drawing near”; therefore, do not follow them. 9) When you hear about wars and unrest, do not be horrified, for this must happen first; but the end is not yet immediate.” 10) Then he said to them: “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. 11) And there will be great earthquakes in places, and famines, and pestilences, and terrible phenomena from the sky, and there will be great signs. 12) But first of all, they will lay hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to synagogues and prisons, and you will appear before kings and rulers for My name’s sake. 13) This will happen to you for [the opportunity] of testimony. 14) Therefore, make it a point in your hearts not to think ahead about how to answer, 15) for I will give you a mouth and wisdom that all your adversaries will not be able to resist and contradict. 16) You will also be betrayed by your parents, and brothers, and relatives, and friends, and [some] of you will be put to death; 17) and you will be hated by everyone for My name's sake; 18) [but] not even a hair of your head will be lost. 19) Through your patience you will win your souls. 20) When you see Jerusalem surrounded by troops, then know that its desolation is approaching: 21) then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains; and whoever is in the middle of it, come out; and whoever is in the surrounding area, do not enter it, 22) for these are the days of vengeance, that all that has been written may be fulfilled. 23) Woe to those who are pregnant and nursing [breasts] in those days! For there will be great distress on earth, and wrath against this people. 24) And they will fall by the mouth of the sword /by the edge of the sword/, and will be led into captivity among all nations; and Jerusalem will be trampled under foot by the Gentiles until the times of the nations are fulfilled. 25) And there will be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars, and on earth - the oppression of the nations from the confusion of the roaring sea and waves; 26) people will languish with fear and anticipation of the disasters coming to the whole universe, for the powers of heaven will be shaken, 27) and then they will see the Son of Man coming on a cloud with great power and majesty. 28) When this begins, then look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” 29) And he said to them: “Look at the little fig tree and at all the trees: 30) when they already bear fruit, you know that summer is already near. 31) So, and when you see what this will be, know that the Kingdom of God is near. 32) Truly I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all things are done. 33) Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away. 34) Take care of yourself, so that your hearts are not weighed down by hangovers, and drunkenness, and the worries of this life, and so that that day does not overtake you suddenly, 35) for like a snare it will come upon everyone who sits on the whole face of the earth. 36) Watch therefore, praying at all times, that you may be counted worthy to escape all those future [disasters] and to stand before the Son of Man.” 37) For days He taught in the church; When he went out, he spent the nights on the Mount of Olives. 38) And all the people came to Him in the church early in the morning to listen to Him. 1) The Feast of Unleavened Bread, which is called Passover, was approaching, 2) and the chief priests and scribes were looking for how to destroy Jesus, but they were afraid of the people. 3) Satan entered into Judas, who was called Iscariot, one of the Twelve, 4) and he went and spoke with the chief priests and rulers, how he would deliver Him to them. 5) And they were happy and agreed to give him money. 6) And he promised, and looked for an opportunity to betray Him not in front of the people. 7) The day of unleavened bread came, on which the Passover sacrifice was to be offered. 8) And He sent Peter and John, saying: “Go, prepare the Passover for us to eat.” 9) And they said: “Where do you want us to cook?” 10) And he said to them: “Behold, as you enter the city, a certain man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him to the house he enters, 11) and say to the owner of the house: “The Teacher says to you: “Where is the living room in which I will eat the Passover with My disciples?” 12) And he will show you a large refectory furnished; and cook there." 13) When they went, they found it as He had told them, and prepared the Passover. 14) And when the hour came, He lay down, and the twelve Apostles with Him, 15) and said to them: “I have longed to eat this Passover with you before I suffer, 16) for I tell you that from now on I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” 17) And having received the cup, he gave thanks and said: “Take it and divide it among yourselves, 18) for I tell you that I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” 19) And he took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to them, saying: “This is My body, which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 20) In the same way - and the cup after supper, saying: “This is the cup of the New Testament in My Blood, which will be poured out for you. 21) Yet, behold, the hand of him who betrays Me is with Me on the table. 22) And while the Son of Man goes as determined, nevertheless, woe to him through whom He is betrayed.” 23) And they began to ask each other which of them would be the one who would do this. 24) A dispute arose between them as to which of them should be considered greater. 25) He said to them: “The kings of the Gentiles rule over the nations, and those who have power over them are called benefactors, 26) but you are not so: but whoever is the greatest among you is like the younger, and whoever is in charge is like a servant. 27) For which is greater: who reclines, or who serves? Isn't he reclining? I am among you as an employee. 28) You are the ones who remained with Me in My temptations. 29) And I lay before you, as My Father hath given Me, a kingdom, 30) that ye may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, and may sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.” 31) The Lord said: “Simon! Simon! Behold, Satan asked that he might sift [you] like wheat, 32) But I prayed for you, so that your faith would not fail; and you, having once been converted, strengthen your brethren.” 33) He said to Him: “Lord! I am ready to go with You to prison and to death.” 34) But He said: “I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know Me.” And he said to them: 35) “When I sent you without bag, and without scrip, and without sandals, did you lack anything?” 36) And they said: “Nothing.” So He said to them: “But now whoever has a bag, take the scrip in the same way; and whoever does not have it, sell your clothes and buy a sword. 37) For I tell you that this also which is written must be fulfilled in Me: “And I am numbered with the wicked” (Is. 53:12). For whatever is about Me has an end.” 38) And they said: “Lord! Here, here are two swords." And He said to them: “Enough.” 39) And going out, he went as usual to the Mount of Olives. And His disciples followed Him. 40) And when they arrived at the place, he said to them: “Pray so that you will not fall into temptation.” 41) And He Himself walked away from them to the distance of a thrown stone, and, kneeling down, prayed, 42) saying: “Father! If You want, carry this cup past Me! However, not My will, but Yours be done.” 43) An angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him. And, being in agony, he prayed more diligently. 44) And His sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground. 45) And when he got up from prayer and came to the disciples, he found them sleeping from sadness. 46) And he said to them: “Why are you sleeping? Get up, pray, so that you do not fall into temptation.” 47) While He was still saying this, behold, the crowd, and one called Judas, one of the Twelve, preceded them, and he approached Jesus to kiss Him. 48) Jesus said to him: “Judas! Do you betray the Son of Man by kissing?” 49) Those who saw what was happening around Him, and what would happen later, said to Him: “Lord! Shouldn't we strike with a sword? 50) And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. 51) Jesus answered and said, “Leave it as it was until now.” And when he touched his ear, he healed him. 52) Jesus said to the high priests and the rulers of the church and the elders who came to Him: “As if you came out against a thief with swords and staves? 53) When I was with you every day in the church, you did not raise your hands against Me, but this is your hour and the power of darkness.” 54) They took Him and led Him to the house of the high priest. Peter followed from afar. 55) When they lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat around, Peter was also among them. 56) When one maid saw him sitting by the light and looked closely at him, she said: “And this one was with Him.” 57) But he denied Him, saying: “Woman, I do not know Him.” 58) And after a little [time] another, seeing him, said: “And you are one of them.” Peter said: “O man, not me!” 59) And there was a gap of about an hour, another one said: “Truly, this one was with Him. For he is also a Galilean.” 60) And Peter said: “Man, I don’t know what you are saying.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. 61) And the Lord turned and looked at Peter, and Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He said: “For before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” 62) And Peter went out and wept bitterly. 63) And the men who held Him mocked Him, beating Him. 64) And they closed Him, and struck Him on the face, and asked Him, saying: “Prophesy, who struck You?” 65) And many other blasphemies were uttered against Him. 66) And when the day came, the elders of the people, and the high priests, and the scribes gathered together, and brought Him into their council, saying: “If you are the Christ, tell us.” 67) And he said to them: “If I tell you, you will not believe; 68) even if I ask, you will not answer Me and will not let me go. 69) From now on the Son of Man will sit at the right hand of the power of God.” 70) They all said: “So, You are the Son of God?” He said, "You say that I am." 71) And they said: “What more testimony do we want? For we ourselves have heard from His mouth.” 1) And the whole multitude rose up and led Him to Pilate. 2) They began to accuse Him, saying: “We have found Him corrupting our people, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, and calling Himself Christ the King.” 3) Pilate asked Him, saying: “Are you the King of the Jews?” And He, answering, said: “You speak.” 4) Pilate said to the high priests and the people: “I do not find any [reason for initiating] a case in this Man.” 5) But they insisted, saying: “He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee to this place.” 6) Pilate, having heard about Galilee, asked if [This] Man was a Galilean. 7) And when he learned that He was from Herod’s region, He sent Him to Herod, who himself was in Jerusalem those days. 8) Herod, seeing Jesus, was very happy. For he had been wanting to see Him for a long time, since he had heard a lot about Him, and hoped to see some sign that He had created. 9) And he asked Him in many words, but He answered him nothing. 10) The chief priests and scribes stood, constantly accusing Him. 11) Herod humiliated Him with his soldiers, and mocked [Him], dressing Him in white clothes, and sent him back to Pilate. 12) And on that very day Pilate and Herod became friends, for before they had been at enmity with each other. 13) Pilate, having called the high priests and rulers and the people, 14) said to them: “You brought this man to me, as if he was corrupting the people; and so, having interrogated you in front of you, I did not find this Man guilty of anything of which you accuse Him. 15) But Herod [also] is not, for I sent you to him; and, behold, nothing worthy of death was done by Him. 16) So, having punished Him, I will release Him.” 17) And for the sake of the holiday, he needed to release one [prisoner] to them. 18) The whole crowd shouted together: “Take Him, and release Barabbas to us!” 19) He was put in prison for causing some disturbance and murder in the city. 20) Again Pilate spoke to them, wanting to release Jesus. 21) And they shouted, saying: “Crucify, crucify Him!” 22) He said to them the third time: “What evil has He done? I did not find any basis for the death penalty in Him; So, I will punish Him and let Him go.” 23) And they continued to loudly demand that He be crucified; and their voices prevailed. 24) And Pilate decided to comply with their request. 25) He released to them the one who was imprisoned for sedition and murder, whom they asked for; He betrayed Jesus to their will. 26) And when they led Him away, they captured a certain Simon of Cyrene, who was coming from the village, and they laid a cross on him to carry after Jesus. 27) A large crowd of people and women followed Him, weeping and lamenting for Him. 28) Jesus turned to them and said, “Daughters of Jerusalem! Weep not for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. 29) Because, behold, the days are coming in which they will say: “Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that have not given birth, and the breasts that have not nursed!” 30) Then they will begin to say to the mountains: “Fall on us!” - and to the hills: “Cover us!” 31) For if they do this to a green tree, what will happen to a dry tree? 32) They also brought two villains with Him to execute them. 33) And after they came to a place called Skull [Calvariae], there they crucified Him and the thieves, one on the right and the other on the left. 34) Jesus said: “Father! Forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” They divided His clothes by casting lots. 35) And the people stood watching, and the rulers mocked Him along with them, saying: “He saved others; let him save himself, if this one is Christ, God’s chosen one.” 36) The soldiers also mocked Him, coming up and offering Him vinegar, 37) and saying: “If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself.” 38) There was also an inscription above Him, written in Greek, Latin and Hebrew letters: “This is the King of the Jews.” 39) One of those hanged robbers slandered Him, saying: “If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us.” 40) Answering, the other calmed him down, saying: “And you do not fear God, when you yourself are condemned to the same thing? 41) And we [were] justly condemned, because we accepted what was worthy of what we did, but He did nothing wrong.” 42) And he said to Jesus: “Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom!” 43) And Jesus said to him: “Truly I tell you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.” 44) Now it was about the sixth hour of the day, and darkness fell over all the land until the ninth hour. 45) And the sun was darkened, and the curtain of the church was torn in the middle. 46) And Jesus cried out loudly and said: “Father! I commit My spirit into Your hands.” And having said this, he gave up the ghost. 47) Seeing what was happening, the centurion glorified God, saying: “Truly this man was a Righteous One.” 48) And the whole crowd of them, who had gathered to see this spectacle, and seeing what was happening, returned, beating their chests. 49) And all who knew Him, and the women who had followed Him from Galilee, stood afar off, looking at this. 50) And, behold, a man named Joseph, who was a decurion, a good and righteous man, 51) this did not agree with their advice and deed; from Arimathea, the city of Judea, which itself was expecting the Kingdom of God, 52) he came to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus; 53) and, taking it off, wrapped it in a shroud and laid it in a tomb hewn out of the rock, in which no one had ever been laid. 54) And that day was Friday, and the Saturday dawned. 55) The women who had come with Him from Galilee also followed and looked at the tomb and how His body was laid out. 56) And when they returned, they prepared incense and ointments; and on the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment. 1) On the very first [day of the week after] Saturday, very early, they came to the tomb, bringing the aromas they had prepared; 2) and found the stone rolled away from the tomb. 3) And when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4) And it happened, when they were perplexed about this, behold, two men appeared before them in shining clothes. 5) When they were afraid and bowed their faces to the ground, they said to them: “Why are you looking for the living among the dead? 6) He is not here, but He has risen. Remember how He spoke to you while He was still in Galilee, 7) saying: “For the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again.” 8) And they remembered His words. 9) And returning from the tomb, they announced all this to the eleven and to all the rest. 10) There were Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary, [the mother of] James, and others with them, who told the Apostles about this. 11) And they saw that these words were like nonsense, and they did not believe them. 12) Peter, getting up, ran to the tomb and, bending down, saw only the linens lying, and walked away, marveling at what had happened. 13) And behold, two of them went that same day to a village that was sixty furlongs from Jerusalem, called Emmaus. 14) And they themselves talked among themselves about all these events. 15) And it came to pass: when they were talking and reasoning among themselves; and Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. 16) Their eyes were darkened, [so that] they would not recognize Him. 17) And he said to them: “What kind of speech is this that you reason among yourself as you walk and are sad?” 18) And answering, one [of them], named Cleopas, said to Him: “You, the only one who came to Jerusalem, do not know about what has happened in it these days?” 19) He said to them: “About what?” And they said: “About Jesus of Nazareth, who was a Prophet, mighty in deed and word before God and all the people; 20) and how our high priests and princes delivered Him up to be condemned to death and crucified Him; 21) we hoped that He was the Redeemer of Israel; and now with all that, it’s already the third day today since this happened. 22) But some of our women also terrified us: they were at the tomb before dawn 23) and, not finding His body, they came, saying about themselves that they even saw the appearance of angels who say that He is alive. 24) And some of our men went to the tomb and found, just as the women had said, but they did not find Him.” 25) And He said to them: “O fools, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! 26) Was it not necessary for Christ to suffer in this way and thus to enter into His glory?” 27) And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he explained to them what was in all the Scriptures concerning Him. 28) And they approached the village to which they were going; and He pretended to want to move on. 29) And they restrained Him, saying: “Stay with us, for the day has already fallen to evening.” And He went in with them. 30) And it came to pass, as He reclined with them, He took the bread, and blessed it, and broke it, and gave it to them. 31) And their eyes were opened, and they recognized Him, and He disappeared from their sight. 32) And they said to each other: “Were not our hearts burning within us when He spoke on the road and when He opened the Scripture to us?” 33) And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem and found the eleven [Apostles] gathered [together], and those who were with them, 34) saying: “For the Lord has truly risen and appeared to Simon.” 35) And they told what happened on the way, and how He was recognized by them in the breaking of bread. 36) While they were saying this, Jesus stood in the midst of them and said to them: “Peace be with you; It’s me, don’t be afraid.” 37) Confused and frightened, they thought that they saw a spirit. 38) And he said to them: “Why are you confused, and [such] thoughts enter your hearts? 39) Look at My hands and My feet; that it is I Myself; touch and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.” 40) And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. 41) While they still did not believe and were amazed for joy, He said: “Do you have anything to eat here?” 42) And they gave Him some of the baked fish and honeycomb. 43) And when he had eaten before them, he had eaten, and gave them the remainder. 44) And he said to them: “These are the words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything must be fulfilled that was written about Me in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms.” 45) Then he opened their senses, so that they might understand the Scriptures. 46) And he said to them: “For thus it is written, and thus it became necessary for Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead on the third day, 47) and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48) You are witnesses to this. 49) And I send the promise of My Father upon you; But you sit in the city [Jerusalem] until you are endowed with power from on high.” 50) He led them out as far as Bethany and, lifting up His hands, blessed them. 51) And it happened: when he blessed them, he separated from them and was transferred to heaven. 52) And they bowed and returned to Jerusalem with great joy; 53) and always remained in the church, glorifying and blessing God.
