O Christ, give me words of wisdom,
Words of knowledge and Divine understanding,
For you know the powerlessness of my word
And my non-involvement in external science.
You know that you alone I have life, and understanding (word), and knowledge, and wisdom,
Savior, God and protector in life,
And the breath of my humble soul.
I am a wanderer and poor in words;
You are my hope and my help,
You are my praise, my wealth and glory.
You wanted from the world, the Word,
To be kind enough to perceive me as strange,
Unworthy, insignificant and worse
Every person and every dumb animal.
That is why I trust in Your mercy,
And I ask You, and I fall down, and I say:
Give me the right word, give me strength, give me strength
To say to all those dedicated to You
And those who serve You, the King of all,
Tell the celebrants, and the rulers, and the ministers,
Those who think that they see You and serve You,
And they truly work for You as the Lord.
All people: kings and nobles,
Priests, bishops, monks and commoners,
Do not consider it unworthy to listen to the voice
And my words - an insignificant person,
But open the ears of my heart (yours)
And hear and understand what he says
God of all and before all ages,
Unapproachable, the only Almighty,
In whose hand is the breath of everything that exists.
Kings, you do well to wage war against the pagans,
If you yourself do not create pagan
Affairs and customs, advice and decisions
And with many deeds and words
Do not reject me, your King.
It would be better for you to keep My words
And the right to keep all My commandments,
Leading a serene life.
For what good is it for you to defend the world?
From death and temporary slavery, to being slaves ourselves every day
Passions and demons through deeds (one’s own)
And heirs of the unquenchable fire.
For all deeds are good, whatever anyone does
If first of all he has mercy on himself,
And he keeps My words with all care,
And shows sincere repentance
In what was done (by him), without a doubt, before,
And after that he never returns to that
But remains (firm) in My Master's words
And true laws and commandments;
And so he does everything without violation
Even to death, not a single word,
Not a single line of what was written
Without neglecting. (Here) this is a sacrifice for me,
This is incense and an offering and a gift to Me;
Without this, you are worse than the pagans.
Bishops are chairmen, understand!
You are the imprint of My image,
You are worthily appointed to converse with Me,
You have prestige over all the righteous,
As those who are called My disciples 347
And those who bear My Divine image;
You are above even the slightest general meeting
They perceived such power,
What I received from the Father - the Word,
Who became incarnate, being God by nature
And having become twofold in actions,
I, Who am inseparably and unmergedly
God, and vice versa, man and God.
As a man, I have vouchsafed (you) to hold Me with your hands,
Like God, I am completely Elusive for mortal hands,
And invisible to those who don't see,
And unapproachable, [when I am] slain for everyone,
I am twofold in one form.
Among the bishops there are those who, because of this
They exalt themselves above all the least,
As above the despised and below those sitting.
Among the bishops there are those who are far from this dignity,
Not one of those whose life agrees with their words,
Being the seal of their Divinely inspired
But of those whose life is contrary to their words,
And to whom My terrible and Divine (sacraments) are unknown:
They think that they hold [in the Eucharist] bread, which is fire,
And, like the simple, they despise My bread,
And they think that they see and eat a piece (of bread),
Without seeing My invisible glory.
Of the bishops there are many of the few,
Which are high and lowly
Thin and nasty humility,
Who pursue human glory,
And they despise Me, the Creator of all,
Like a beggar and a despised poor man;
They touch My body inappropriately
And, seeking superiority over many,
They enter My sanctuary uninvited,
And (inside) the chamber of ineffable [mysteries]
My grace, which they in no way received,
[By approaching] what it is not appropriate for them to look at from the outside;
But I am long-suffering, (being) very philanthropic.
When they enter, they talk to Me as to a friend,
And not staying there in fear like slaves,
They show themselves to be faces close to [Me]. Not understanding My grace,
They also promise to intercede for others,
Being themselves guilty of many sins.
Dressing the body very well,
They appear shiny and appear clean;
Souls are worse than dirt and mud,
Better (worse) than any deadly poison
These wicked righteous people have.
For, just as Judas was once a traitor,
Having accepted bread from Me unworthily,
I ate it like a piece of ordinary bread,
In him immediately and a shameless traitor
He made me (his) teacher,
Taking advantage of him as a servant and slave,
And the executor of his will;
This happens in ignorance and to those
Which are unworthy, impudent and presumptuous
They touch My Divine secrets.
In particular (such are) those who are elevated on thrones above the saints 348,
Over the altar and the priesthood,
Having a previously damaged conscience
And after that completely condemned;
They, entering My Divine Court,
They stand shamelessly in the sanctuaries,
Speaking openly before Me
And completely unaware of My Divine glory,
Which if they had seen, they would not have done it
And (even) on the threshold of My Divine Church
They would not have dared to enter so boldly.
So what is all this that is written,
Truly and truly, anyone who wishes (can) know
From the very things that we priests do;
And not finding any lies at all,
That God Himself spoke this through me,
Unless (unless) he is one of those who do this and does not try to dispel with cunning words
And hide (your) own shame,
Who is before Angels and men
Will be revealed to those who open
“The secret of darkness” (I Cor. 4:5), Lord God of all.
Which of us, today's priests,
Having cleansed myself from iniquities,
So you dared (to begin) the priesthood?
Who could say this with boldness,
That he despised earthly glory
And for the sake of one heavenly one he performs sacred acts?
Who was content with only what was necessary?
And did you not hide anything that belonged to your neighbor?
Through which he tried to become and become [a clergyman],
By buying or selling grace?
Who did not prefer a friend to a worthy one,
Putting rather unworthy?
Who doesn't try their loved ones
Make friends bishops
To have power in everything
Alien? after all, this is (another) mediocre (case),
Considered even sinless by those
Who interfere in the affairs of another church.
Who, at the request of the worldly (people):
Nobles, friends, rich and bosses
Didn’t ordain (someone) and contrary to his dignity?
Truly there is no one now
All of them, having a pure heart,
Whoever is not pricked by conscience,
Because he certainly did one of the things I said.
But we all sin fearlessly
Without caring about stopping evil,
Plunging into the depths of evil and remaining insensitively in it.
For without tasting the Divine glory,
We cannot despise earthly glory.
The love of glory, I say, is human
Absolutely does not allow the soul to humble itself,
Nor voluntarily blame yourself.
If so, then tell me how
Chasing after human glory
And in need of perishable wealth,
Who wants to have a lot of gold,
And insatiable in theft,
And vindictive towards those who do not often give,
Dare to say that he has God as his dweller (in himself)?
He who has not accepted Christ
And His Father and the Holy Spirit,
Known to live and walk,
One God in your heart,
How will true service be demonstrated?
From whom else will he learn humility?
Or how will he be instructed in the Divine will?
Who will be an intercessor for him or will reconcile (him) with God?
And he will present himself as a shameless servant
To the only pure and immaculate God,
Whom the Cherubim dare not look upon,
And Who is impregnable for all Angels?
Who will strengthen him to rule without sin?
And it is not condemned to perform sacred
The terrible service of the immaculate sacrifice?
What Angel, what man can
Should I say it or can I do it?
For I say and testify to everyone:
(No one is mistaken and do not be deceived by words)
Who will not leave the world first
And from the heart he will not hate (everything) worldly,
And he will not sincerely love the one Christ,
And for His sake he will not destroy his soul,
Without caring for anything for human life,
But as if dying hourly, he will not cry and sob much for himself,
And will have no desire only for Him alone,
And through many sorrows and labors
Not worthy to receive the Divine Spirit,
Which He gave to the Divine Apostles,
In order through Him to drive out all passion,
And it is easy to correct any virtue,
And acquire abundant sources of tears,
Where does the purification and contemplation of the soul come from?
Where does the knowledge of the Divine will come from?
Where does enlightenment by Divine illumination come from?
And contemplation of the unapproachable light,
Where does dispassion and holiness come from?
Given to all who are worthy
See and have God in your heart,
And be preserved and preserved by Him
His Divine commandments intact;
Let him not dare to accept the priesthood
And preside over souls or become a boss.
For as Christ to God His Father
And he is offered and brings himself;
So He Himself brings us
And He Himself again accepts us.
For [otherwise] there will be judgment and condemnation
(This is) worse than murder, worse than adultery and fornication
All these (sins) are now being committed against people,
For we sin, of course, against each other.
He who brazenly sells Divine [sacraments]
And selling the grace of the Spirit
He sins, of course, against God Himself.
For he who represents the face of the Word
And I must live like It,
And, following Him, say this:
Foxes, no doubt, have holes,
I don’t have where to lay my head (Matthew 8:20).
For he who is worthy to be a servant of Christ must have absolutely nothing of his own,
Neither to acquire anything worldly,
Apart from what is necessary for the body and nothing more;
Everything else belongs to the poor and strangers,
And his church [where he serves].
If, on the contrary, he dares for his expenses
It's timeless to use it with power
And distribute what belongs to strangers to relatives,
And build houses and buy fields,
Then, alas, what kind of judgment awaits him?
Without a doubt he is like a man,
He who has squandered it ill through foolishness,
Who, having been captured and not having anything to pay,
When they demand money from him for her, of course,
To compensate his wife,
Consigned to prison for imprisonment.
So it will be with us, priests and clergy,
Which for the sake of themselves and relatives and friends
Abuse of church income
And they don’t care about the poor at all,
But they build houses, baths, monasteries, towers,
They give dowries and arrange marriages,
Our own churches are like strangers,
They despise and neglect them.
Being away for a long time,
We live in a foreign country
Leaving their wives widows
And without having any care about them.
Others (of us) abide in them and live
Not because our love for them holds us back,
But just to live from rich incomes
About the beauty of the soul of the bride of Christ
Which of us priests cares?
Show me (at least) just one, and I will be satisfied with it.
But woe to us priests, monks, bishops and clergy of the seventh century, 349
Since the laws of God and the Savior
We trample down as if we are worthless.
And if somewhere there was one small one in front of people,
Great before God, as known by Him,
Not condescending to our passions,
Then he is immediately driven away, like one of the villains,
And is expelled by us from (our) environment,
And we are excommunicated from the meeting, as before
Our Christ - (from the synagogue) by those of that time
Bishops and formidable Jews,
As He Himself said 350 and always says it
With the clear voice of His greatness.
But there is a God who will lift him up
And he will perceive it as in this life,
So it will be in the future, and will glorify
With all the saints whom He loved.
But what does the Word say to us?
Those of the monks who consider themselves zealous,
Depict the inner with piety,
Then the external, of course, will be pure before Me 351.
For it will be to your advantage
And those who see your good deeds,
Otherwise it is desirable for Me, the Creator of all,
And for My intelligent and Divine ranks.
If you decorate the external likeness of a person
Just his usual clothes
And you seem kind to those who see you
Through external exercise in labors,
About My dear image completely
Don't worry about cleaning and decorating
With care, tears and labors
The One through whom you are for Me and for everyone
People, of course, reasonable and Divine; Then truly you are like rotting tombs before Me,
As the Pharisees once did, as I said,
Speaking and denouncing their madness:
On the outside you shine, but on the inside you are rotten and full of
Dead bones and filled with rotten
The heart of evil thoughts, words,
Passions, thoughts and crafty worries (Matthew 23:27 – 28).
For which of you has sought this:
Fasting, I say, cruel life, labors,
Let down hair, iron chains,
Hair shirts, many calluses on the knees,
Hard bed, hay for laying the bed
And any other suffering in life?
(Everything) is good if it happens well,
[As an accessory] of intelligent and secret doing
Yours, with knowledge, wisdom and intelligence;
If - without it, then what great thing do you think in this,
I think of myself as nothing, being nothing;
Without inner work, you are perhaps like lepers,
Dressed in light clothes to deceive those who see (them).
But greeting all outsiders [with the wish] to rejoice,
Earnestly strive to become [doers of] one
Internal work, with sweat and labor
In divine virtues and sacred deeds,
In order to appear before Me virgins in thoughts,
Enlightened with all understanding,
And unite with Me - Word in Word
My wisdom and knowledge of the best.
The whole multitude of My holy people,
Come hastily to Me, your Lord,
Go and be freed from the bonds of this world;
Hate every deception of feelings,
Flee quickly from these causes of evil:
Lust of sight and flesh, Pride of thought and life (I John 2:16).
Know that (all) unrighteousness in the world,
Leads to the death of the user
They are passionate or partial in life,
And unhappily makes me my enemy.
Accept in your heart love for Mine
Divine things - eternal blessings,
Which, having become incarnate, I prepared for you as a friend,
So that you will always be with Me, shining indescribably
At the table of my kingdom
Heavenly with all the saints.
Know yourself, that you are mortal and perishable,
Being a small remnant of life in the world,
And that nothing will follow you from what is in the world
Brilliant or entertaining and pleasant,
When you go from here to the villages there,
Except for the deeds done
By you in life, evil or good.
And having known the decay and mortality of everything
And leaving longer, go to grief, I am calling you
To Himself - God of all and Savior,
So that you may truly live forever and ever
And enjoyed My blessings,
Which I have prepared for those who love Me
Always, now and forever. Amen.
In l. n. there is no this hymn, as well as in P. r.; in the latter it is known only by its title in the table of contents of the hymns, as the last 58 word.
ὡς ὄντες εἰς ὄνομα τῶν μαθητῶν μου - as bearing the name of My disciples, that is, the apostolic title.
i.e., the seventh millennium from the creation of the world.
The Holy Father probably means here Matt. 18, 10.
