Chapter 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 A great and severe persecution began against the Gospel; The Corinthians endured grief according to their strength, but the apostle endured grief beyond his strength. Despite this, the apostle, neglecting the disasters that surrounded him from the Asians, hastened to send Titus to console and strengthen the Corinthians. And when he returned from them and told him about their patience in enduring the disaster, Saint Paul rejoiced and was glad, and wrote to them about the disaster for their sake of Apollos, so that thanks to the much stronger suffering shown in his example, their comparatively moderate suffering, which they themselves had undergone, would seem easier in their eyes. In addition, he wrote that upon receiving this Second Epistle, the Corinthians would forgive and show mercy to the one whom the Apostle himself punished in his First Epistle, for he proved the firmness and steadfastness of his faith in the suffering he endured, in the contrition of heart and in the disasters that befell the Corinthians. So, in view of his repentance and firmness during the persecution, the apostle wrote that they would show him leniency, however, by no means forcing them to do so, but only asking and begging.
