St. John testified about Christ Jesus that He is truly “the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29) - the promised Savior, desired by all. Those who were with him heard this and believed. From them this testimony spread to the people, and everyone began to think that the one testified by John was not an ordinary person. The Savior pointed out this when, in the last days in the church, he asked the heads of the church the question, “Where does the baptism of John come from, from heaven or from man?” (Mk.11:29-30) They avoided answering, because they could not help but see that John did not come from himself, baptizing with water. But having said this, they immediately had to recognize his testimony that the Promised One was before them, and as a result submit to His teaching. And they did not want this, not for any fundamental reasons, but because of one prejudice. But their persistence in no way detracts from the strength of St. John’s testimony. It is still as authentic as it was when it came out of his mouth. And we hear John showing us the true Savior, and thereby we revive our faith, as faith that has tangible evidence for itself.
