From an 80-year miracle remembered in the steppe to young hearts gathered in Syria and a new kindergarten blessing children in Africa, September carried quiet yet radiant reminders that Christ is with His people everywhere.
In the Kalmyk capital of Elista the Russian Orthodox Church marked the eightieth anniversary of the miraculous Appearance of Christ the Saviour. On 10 September 2026, by blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, clergy and faithful gathered where the Lord had once been seen, giving thanks that the memory of this wonder had been kept alive by a simple couple, Semyon and Maria Bondarenko. Archbishop Justinian reminded the people that the two “were not afraid, having seen the Lord, but served so that the memory of the Elista miracle would be preserved in the hearts of the faithful.” That spirit of grateful remembrance and fresh beginning coloured the whole month. In Romania, ancient and new saints were honoured; in Syria, Orthodox youth met under the protection of the Patriarchate of Antioch; in Congo a long-awaited kindergarten opened its doors; and Bulgarian Patriarch Daniel prayed at the Jordan River. Everywhere believers saw the same gentle truth: the Church continues to nurture souls, old and young, in every land.

In the heart of Kalmykia the Russian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) rejoiced on 10 September at the eightieth anniversary of the miraculous Appearance of Christ the Saviour. Archbishop Justinian of Elista and Kalmykia led the faithful in thanksgiving, recalling how local believers Semyon and Maria Bondarenko preserved the memory of the wonder. Family Traditions Contest in St Petersburg
The Don Orthodox Centre “Sophia” of the Rostov-on-Don Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) organised an inter-regional children’s art contest titled “Traditions of My Family. My Small Homeland.” Held in St Petersburg from 9 to 13 September, the event drew young artists from several regions. Through drawings and crafts the children expressed love for their families, their faith and the places where they grew up. The initiative helped strengthen bonds between Orthodox families and parishes while giving children a joyful way to share the beauty of Christian life in their native land.
At the ancient Patriarchal Monastery of St George in Al-Humayra, the Patriarchate of Antioch welcomed nearly eighty young men and women from across Syria for the “Ana Icon” Orthodox Youth Meeting. The first day of the gathering, organised by the Church of Greece news service, opened with prayer and fellowship. Young people from different dioceses met to strengthen their faith, share their struggles and encourage one another in following Christ amid the challenges of their country. The meeting offered a living sign that the Church continues to form the next generation even in difficult places.
The Romanian Orthodox Church celebrated the feast of its patroness at St Sophia – Floreasca Church in the Romanian capital. This historic temple is the only monument church in Bucharest protected by St Martyr Sophia and her three daughters, Faith, Hope and Love. On the patronal feast hierarchs and clergy concelebrated the Divine Liturgy. The faithful gave thanks for the rare dedication and for the quiet witness of a church that has guarded the memory of a mother and her martyred children for generations.
His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel of Bulgaria arrived in Jordan on 28 September for a fraternal visit to the Patriarchate of Jerusalem. Accompanied by His Beatitude Patriarch Theophilos, he prayed immediately after arriving at the site of the Lord’s Baptism on the Jordan River. The visit, reported by the Church of Greece, brought a visible sign of Orthodox unity and love for the holy places where our salvation began.
New Kindergarten Opens at St Mark’s School in Kinshasa
The Church of Greece shared joyful news from the Democratic Republic of Congo: the long-awaited kindergarten of St Mark’s School in Kinshasa was solemnly inaugurated. Parents and local residents had prayed for this blessing for years. The new building answers both the needs of families and the desire to give the youngest children a Christian beginning. The event was described as “a special blessing and particular joy” for the entire school community.
The Romanian Orthodox Malajnica Monastery in the Timok Vicariate, Diocese of Dacia Felix, Serbia, prepared to host the local proclamation of the canonisation of St Magdalena of Malajnica on 12–13 September. Hierarchs, clergy, civil authorities and pilgrims were expected to gather for the festive services. The event honours a holy woman of the region and strengthens the bonds between the Romanian Orthodox Church and the faithful living in eastern Serbia.
Beyond classes and examinations, however, a far more important work is being accomplished: the formation of character and the inner renewal of the person
The month began with the Church New Year on 1 September (14 September on the Julian calendar), a gentle reminder that every year is a fresh gift from the Creator. The Nativity of the Most-Holy Theotokos on 8 September (21 September Julian) filled homes with joy for the birth of the one who would become the Mother of God. The Exaltation of the Precious Cross on 14 September (27 September Julian) called the faithful to venerate the wood of salvation and to take up their own crosses with courage. The repose of St Sergius of Radonezh on 25 September and the repose of St John the Theologian on 26 September invited believers to draw strength from the great fathers who still pray for the Church.
Looking ahead
October opens with the Protection of the Most-Holy Theotokos on 1 October, when we ask the Mother of God to spread her veil over all who seek her help. The Sunday after the Elevation and the feast of Apostle Thomas will follow. On 6 October the Church will honour St Innocent, Metropolitan of Moscow, apostle to Alaska and Siberia.
May the gentle light that shone in Elista, in Syria, in Bucharest and in Kinshasa warm every reader’s heart until we meet again.
