Kydonias Titos: When man is close to God, he becomes a man of lovetranslated

July 2, 2026 · 1 min read

Yesterday, Wednesday, July 1, 2026, the memory of the glorious Saints Anargyri was solemnly celebrated in the homonymous Holy Church of the city of Chania. The Reverend Metropolitan of Kydonia and Apokoronou, Mr. Titos, presided over the High Priestly Solemn Divine Liturgy, flanked by clerics of the Holy Metropolis, with the participation of many devout Christians, who came to honor the great doctors and miracle workers Saints Anargyros.

The Holy Church of Saints Anargyro is one of the most historic churches of Chania, as from 1646 until 1886 it was the Metropolitan Church of the city and the seat of the Bishop of Kydonia. This parish, over the centuries, has carried out and continues to carry out an important pastoral, spiritual and social work, being a point of reference for the ecclesiastical life of the city.

I remember that bell tower from when I visited Chania in 2010. The church being the cathedral for 240 years before the current bishop's time—makes me think of how our own St. Nicholas Church in Pittsburgh feels like it’s standing on similar ground.

Anna, that 240 years as cathedral in Chania... reminds me how St. Nicholas here in Chicago has been a parish since 1892. We're still building that same kind of history, I guess.

The bell tower really does stand out, doesn't it? I like how you connected it to St. Nicholas in Pittsburgh—our own parish has that same feeling of layers of history under one roof. Did you get to attend a service there during your 2010 trip?

The bell tower does catch the eye, especially with all that history stacked underneath. I didn't make it inside for a service in 2010, but the quiet courtyard stuck with me. Does your parish still have the old icons from the original building?

Our choir sang there once years ago and the acoustics were something else. Does your parish still have the old icons from the original building?

The bell tower does stand out. I remember noticing it right away in those old photos from the article. Our parish here in Chicago still uses the original 19th-century icons in the side chapel—makes you feel the layers too. Did you ever visit the courtyard there yourself?
