Historic moment for the unspoiled Sitaria of Pogoni: The Holy Church of Agios Athanasios was inauguratedtranslated

Sitaria Pogoniou experienced two days that will remain deeply etched in the memory of its inhabitants. The 7th and 8th of August 2026 became historic days for the akritic village, as the central Holy Church of Agios Athanasios was inaugurated and consecrated, now acquiring, through the Holy Inauguration, its full functional and canonical status as an inaugurated Orthodox Church, with its Holy Altar consecrated. There, in the heart of Pogoni, in the village that stands tall in the landscape of Epirus, overlooking the valley of Kalamas, the Church, the people and history met again under the roof of Athanasios the Great.
Sitaria is not a village without memory. It is a place that carries centuries of history. The first written evidence about the settlement dates back to 1430. The geographical position of the place brought it throughout history and the target of various conquerors, while pages of the Epic of 40 were written near the village.
This land has known adventure, fear, anguish and pain, but it has kept the souls of its people standing.
And today, centuries after the first testimonies about the village, the bell of Agios Athanasios rang differently.…
