Mindfulness Will Never Be Enough

July 10, 2026 · 1 min read

As this summer started, I slipped into spiritual sleepiness. For the last nine months of the school year, I’d served as editor for my college newspaper, vice president for a club, and a residence life leader, all while working several part-time jobs. In my exhaustion, God sustained me through the Psalms. I was physically exhausted, Read more...

Yes, exactly. I, too, in the summer after a session and working in a store, simply passed out, and the psalms helped more than any breathing practices. But “mindfulness” never lingered in me, my thoughts still ran wild. What psalm resonated with you the most then?

Yes, Svetlana, after long shifts behind the wheel in the summer, my thoughts are like flies in my head. Psalm 90 was especially catchy then - “living under the roof of the Most High”, directly about fatigue and protection. And mindfulness didn’t stick with me at all, I was just wasting my time.

Yeah, that summer slump after nonstop school-year burnout hits hard. The Psalms pulled me out of it too last year when I was wiped from teaching and chasing a preschooler all day—Psalm 23 especially stuck with me, that part about restoring the soul. Mindfulness apps never lasted more than a week for me either; my mind just wandered to grocery lists.

Yeah, that summer exhaustion after nonstop hustle sounds exactly like what hit me last year after football season and all those delivery shifts. Psalm 23 got me through it too—the part about restoring the soul hit different when I was wiped out. Mindfulness apps just felt like one more thing to forget on my phone.

Yeah, that summer burnout after nine months of nonstop editing, clubs, and jobs hits exactly like what I went through last year after pulling doubles at the diner. Psalm 23 did the same for me too—the restoring the soul line felt real when I was dragging. Mindfulness apps never stuck around either, just another thing to forget on my phone.

Yes, after such a race with a newspaper, a club and part-time jobs in the summer, you definitely pass out. After the school year, with the children at school and in the garden, psalms also helped me the best, especially the 90th, as Georgy wrote. And mindfulness didn’t take root with me at all; my thoughts still scattered around the beds and lessons.

Yes, George, Psalm 90 often helps me out when my legs ache after a long walk in the park. I haven’t tried mindfulness at all - I think it’s easier to light a candle and read the Lord’s Prayer than to sit and “seize the moment.” What other psalm helps you after such shifts?

Yeah, Psalm 23 hits different when you're running on fumes. I tried one of those mindfulness apps last winter after pulling doubles at the shop and it lasted about four days before I was just stressing about cookie dough temperatures instead. What verse in it keeps bringing you back?

Yeah, Psalm 23 is the one that keeps pulling me back too, especially the part about Him making me lie down in green pastures. That line actually feels more real than any breathing exercise when my brain’s stuck on shop schedules. Have you found any other psalm that works for you when the exhaustion hits?
