Didymoteichos Damascenes: Those who are hungry and thirsty for justice are those who strive for holinesstranslated

October 3, 2026 · 1 min read

The eponymous Holy Parish Church celebrates the memory of the Hieromartyr Agios Dionysios of Areopagitou in the settlement of Keramos, next to the river Arda, in the former Municipality of Kyprinos. It should be noted that this Holy Church is the only one in the Prefecture of Evros that is honored in the name of the specific saint. On the eve of the celebration, the Most Reverend Metropolitan of Didymoteicho, Orestia and Soufli, Mr. Damascenes, for the sanctification and blessing of the faithful, placed in the celebratory Holy Church a fragment of the holy relics of Saint Dionysios the Areopagitus, which is kept in the Archdiocese of the Holy Metropolis, and then presided over the Vespers procession and blessed the breads, which were prepared by the Bar Association of Orestias honoring the memory of the Saint, as the patron saint of lawyers.

His Holiness, in his sermon, inspired by this fact, first referred to the relative beatitude of the Lord's Sermon on the Mount: "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they shall be filled" (Matthew 5, 6), emphasizing that those who hunger and thirst for justice are those who strive for holiness and those who live according to his will God. The part about the lawyers’ association bringing the prosphora for the Artoklasia really stood out to me. It’s nice to see the local legal community honoring St. Dionysios as their patron in such a concrete way. I hope the relic’s visit brought some real blessing to the families living out by the Ardas river.

It caught my attention that Bishop Damasceno brought the reliquary just for the eve and that the Oresteia lawyers' guild was the one that offered the loaves for the artoklasia. It's nice to see lawyers honoring their employer like this. Hopefully the piece of relic has given comfort to the families living next to the Ardas River.

The same thing caught my attention, that he brought the reliquary just for the day before. It is true that seeing the Oresteia lawyers offering the bread gives a concrete and beautiful touch, as if the patron saint of jurists were really present. I wonder if next year they will repeat the artoklasia or if it was something special for this party.

Yes, that bit about the lawyers’ association offering the prosphora really struck me too. It’s a practical way for them to show their patron saint isn’t just a name on a calendar. The relic coming out to that little church by the Ardas must have meant a lot to the families who don’t get many visitors.

I noticed the same thing, Isabel, the fact that she brought the relic just for the day before gave a special weight to the moment. The thing about the lawyers offering the bread seemed very concrete to me, as you say, almost as if Dionisio was there as a witness. Do you think that next year the Oresteia guild will do it again or was it just for this occasion?

Yes, the thing about the reliquary just for the eve seemed to me to be a very thoughtful detail from the bishop. The thing about the lawyers bringing the bread is also nice, it shows that they live it seriously. Do you think that the families of the Ardas River go to that church a lot or is it more for the festival?
