Memorial for the fallen of the Battle of Ormeniotranslated

On September 26, 1371, on the banks of the river Evros, near the present-day village of Ormenio, the allied Christian forces of the Balkans, under the leadership of the Serbian kings Vukasin Mrniavcevic and Ioannis Uglesi, attempted with self-sacrifice and bravery to prevent the advance of the Ottomans in the Western Balkans. This battle is known as the battle of Evros, or Jernomianos or Maritsa (Evros river in Bulgarian). Unfortunately, the fate of the Byzantine Empire and the Serbian dominions was later decided by the outcome of this battle.

In memory of all those Christians who fought "for Faith and Country" in the battle of Ormenio, on the initiative of the Holy Metropolis of Didymoteichos, Orestias and Soufli, a Memorial Service is organized every year, with reference to the events and persons of the battle, but also to its significance over time.

This year, the anniversary events were honored by a delegation from the Republic of Serbia and delegations from the Holy Monasteries of Hilandari and Simonopetra, which are spiritually connected to the ruler Ioannis Ughlesis.
