“What does it mean to be a theologian”: Metropolitan Eugene took part in the “Metanoia” program on the “Spas” TV channeltranslated

Chairman of the Synodal Department of Religious Education and Catechesis, Metropolitan Ekaterinburg and Verkhoturye Evgeniy took part in the next episode of the Metanoia program, aired on the SPAS TV channel on September 12, 2026.  The conversation was devoted to one of the pressing issues of Christian life: what it means to be a theologian, and why true theology is not just knowledge about God, but an experience that changes a person.

“Metanoia” is a series of conversations about spiritual life, asceticism and knowledge of God according to the teachings of the Orthodox Church. During the conversation, Bishop Eugene and the famous Orthodox missionary Ilya Kukharev touched on a number of important topics: from why the theologian called the “simplest” of the apostles, to the question of whether “new theology” is possible today.

Why is it not the scientist himself who is called a theologian, but the simplest apostle?

Reflecting on who the Church calls a theologian, Metropolitan Eugene noted that theology is, first of all, the science of the life of God in Himself.
