September 16, 2026 · 1 min read

For an Orthodox believer, fasting is not only a restriction on food. This is the time when a person tries to take a closer look at his life, his actions and relationships with others. Fasting helps free up time and energy for prayer, good deeds and internal work on oneself. In addition to multi-day fasts, the Church has weekly fasting days - Wednesday and Friday. My grandma always said Wednesday is for remembering Judas selling out the Lord, so we skip meat and try to watch our words too. The article's point about using the day to look at our own relationships hit home — I catch myself snapping at the kids over nothing on those days. Makes the fasting feel more real than just the food part.

Sofia’s grandmother is right, Judas’ betrayal is being remembered on Wednesday. It also happens to me that on this day I suddenly begin to notice how in vain I grumble at my daughter about homework. The article was a good reminder that fasting is not only about eating meat, but about looking at your relationships.

Yes, Judas also betrayed the Lord on Wednesday, which is why we fast. I liked how Valentina said that she is starting to notice how she fights with her daughter in vain about homework - the same thing happens to me with my grandchildren some Wednesdays. Fasting takes us away from those habits a little.

My grandmother also said that on Wednesday Judas betrayed Christ, that’s why we fast. The article correctly noted about the relationship: just yesterday on Wednesday I lost my temper and yelled at my son because he came home late from fishing again. Now I'm thinking about how best to fix this.
