The celebration of the Synagogue of Panagia Glystriana in Symitranslated

On Monday, August 31, 2026, and the feast of the Deposition of the Holy Belt of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Most Reverend Metropolitan of Symi, Tilos, Chalkis and Kastellorizos, Mr. Chrysostomos, officiated at Orthros and celebrated the Divine Liturgy, in the magnificent parish Church of Agios Athanasios, Symi, on the feast of Theomitoros and the Synagogue of the Holy Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos, the so-called "Glystrian", which has been treasured in Agios Athanasios for many decades. His co-officiants were the guest clergy, Protopresbyter Fr. Mr. Eleftherios Xirakis, Mr. Agapitos Michellis and Mr. Panormitis Kakakios.

His Holiness, addressing the congregation, instead of another sermon, clearly read the Patriarchal Message of the A.Th.P. of the Ecumenical Patriarch, Mr. Bartholomew on the feast of Indiktos, giving timely wishes to the clergy and the congregation.

Blessed be the holiday. I liked that the Metropolitan read the patriarch's message about the Indict instead of his sermon, it is beautiful and instructive. Icons from such places as Glistriana always bring peace when brought to the church.

How nice the idea of the metropolitan reading the Patriarch's message directly instead of his own sermon. There is humility and that he values the voice of the Church. The icon of Glystrianí must have a very strong history for it to be kept for so many years in San Athanasio.
