The consultations for the Sinai Monastery are in the final stage - A response from the brotherhood is awaitedtranslated

The negotiations between the Sinaitic brotherhood and the Egyptian State seem to have entered the final stretch, regarding the status that will apply to the Holy Monastery of Saint Catherine of Mount Sinai. The postponement of the announcement of the decision of the Egyptian Supreme Court on the appeals that have been filed for the much-lauded decision of the Ismailia Court of Appeal of May 29, 2025, was considered by observers to be indicative of a flexibility on the Egyptian side, while in a very short time from the said postponement it became known that the form of the agreement, which was on the table of discussions, will provide for a unique "dual ownership regime" that will satisfy both sides.

The central axis of the agreement seems to be the fact that the Sinaitic Brotherhood will have the absolute right of religious possession, use and operation, both on real estate and on movables, in perpetuity, but it will not be allowed to transfer, change or utilize both the historical properties of the Monastery and its unique archaeological and Byzantine treasures. I hope this "double ownership" deal actually sticks and gives the brotherhood real say over how the treasures are cared for. The part about them keeping full religious use forever but needing the Egyptian antiquities board's approval on any changes sounds like a sensible middle ground, especially after that Ismailia court ruling. I'll be watching for the monastery's response.

The double ownership idea does seem like a practical compromise, especially with the Antiquities Board having the final say on any alterations to those ancient buildings and icons.
