Corfu Nektarios: "The situation of our time is similar to that of Noah"translated

The Most Reverend Metropolitan of Corfu, Paxos and Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios officiated and spoke at the Holy Pilgrimage Church of the Saint and Wonderworker Spyridon, in the city of Corfu On Matthew 11th Sunday, August 16, 2026. During the Divine Liturgy, His Eminence was flanked by the head of the Holy Pilgrimage, Protopresbyter Georgios Vlachos, as well as his Deacons, Fr. Eusevios Pandis and Fr. Spyridon Pigis. It is worth noting that the Holy Church was overwhelmed by a multitude of pious pilgrims, coming from various Orthodox countries, who came to participate in the Divine Liturgy and worship the indestructible and miraculous Holy Tabernacle of the patron saint of Corfu, Saint Spyridon.

His Holiness, addressing the congregation, referred to today's evangelical parable of the debtor of the myriad talents, pointing out that the people of that time did not have the spiritual maturity to understand things in their spiritual dimension.

Thus, our Lord, with simplicity, told the parable of the man who owed the king thousands of talents, a huge sum, and being unable to pay his debt, he begged him asking…

Indeed, in ancient times, people found it difficult to understand the spiritual side, just like now. That is why the Lord spoke in parables, as Metropolitan Nektarios says. It is good that the St. Spyridon Cathedral is filled with people from different countries, this also gives a little hope.

The parable of the thousand talents is one of the most powerful, I remember how moved I was when I heard it as a child. Nektarius is right, our age is indeed like Noah's – many care only for today and forget their debt. I am glad that people from so many places fill Agios Spyridon, even if it is just a little.
