The Apostolic Reading of Sunday 11th Epistlestranslated

August 16, 2026 · 1 min read

The Apostolic Reading of the Sunday 11th Epistles: 1 Cor. ix 2-12 (16-8-2026) 2 To others I am not an apostle, but to you I am, for the seal of my sending you is in the Lord. 3 This is my answer to those who interrogate me. 4 Do we not have the power to eat and drink? 5 Don't we have the authority of a sister woman from around the world, like the other apostles and the brothers of the Lord and Cephas? 6 Or do I and Barnabas alone have no power not to work? 7 What do the gods and goddesses ever fight? Who plants a vineyard and does not eat its fruit? Or does he feed the flock and not eat the milk of the flock? 8 Do I not speak these things against man? Or doesn't the law also say this? 9 For it is written in the Law of Moses: You shall not be silenced forever. Does not God listen to shouts? 10 Or does he speak for us anyway? for it was written for us, that in hope the plowman owes his plow, and the reaper of his hope shares in hope.

11 If we sow your spiritual things, how much more do we reap your carnal things? 12 If others of your authority take part, shall we not? but we do not use this authority, but we always remain silent, so that we do not cut off what we give to the gospel of Christ.

St. Paul clearly shows us here that he has every right to be supported by the community, but he chooses not to do it, so as not to hinder the Gospel. I was reminded of the verse with the threshing ox – the old law is actually speaking for us, not the animals. At Sunday's service I will listen more carefully to how this is explained.
