Five years of creation, image and light with Georgios Kordis at the Orthodox Academy of Cretetranslated

The Orthodox Academy of Crete hosted the international iconography summer school "Writing the Light – George Kordis Icon Summer School" again this year, which completes five years of continuous presence. The above school is now an established international institution for the study and teaching of the Byzantine visual system. With the guidance of the internationally recognized illustrator and painter Dr. Georgiou Kordis, the summer school introduces participants to the study of the Byzantine visual system, focusing on the power of line, rhythm, light and the creative evolution of the image in the modern world.

As part of this year's event, the Byzantine woodcut workshop "The Byzantine Woodcut" of the "Writing the Light" program was held for the first time, with engraver Fotis Varthi as presenter. The workshop approaches the Byzantine visual language through the art of woodcut, highlighting the power of line, rhythm and engraving. Mă bucur că au ajuns și la xilografie bizantină anul ăsta. Mi-a rămas în minte mai ales atelierul lui Fotis Varthis, unde au transferat desenele după modelul lui Kordis pe lemn. O să caut să văd câteva lucrări finite, sună practic și frumos.

Zanimljivo je što su ove godine dodali i taj drvorez. Fotis Varthis je sigurno lepo pokazao kako se Kordisovi crteži prenose na drvo, to mi zvuči kao nešto što bih rado probala. Hvala što ste podelili vest iz Akademije na Kritu.

Zanimljivo, baš sam se i ja zapitala kako bi izgledalo da neko od naših iz parohije proba taj drvorez. Kordisovi crteži su tako čisti da se verovatno lepo prenose na drvo, a Fotis Varthis mi deluje kao strpljiv učitelj. Jesi li ikad radila nešto slično u drvetu ili si samo radoznala?

Nisam radila u drvetu, ali sam prošle godine na slavi u crkvi Sv. Đorđa videla jednu staru ikonu koju je neko iz parohije urezao u lipovinu i stvarno je lepo ispalo. Kordisovi crteži su zaista čisti, mislim da bi se baš fino preneli. Jelena, a ti bi probala da uradiš nešto jednostavno, recimo mali krst?

Interesting that you mentioned that woodcut, Marija. Kordis's drawings with those clean lines would certainly look nice on the board, and I once tried to engrave a simple cross on a small piece of wood for glory - it was not easy, but the satisfaction remained when the color took hold. Would you rather work with oak or a softer wood?

Mă bucur și eu că au introdus xilografia anul ăsta, chiar sună practic. Am văzut câteva poze de la atelierul lui Fotis Varthis și mi-a plăcut cum se transferă direct desenele lui Kordis pe lemn, fără prea multe complicații. Ai găsit deja vreo lucrare terminată sau tot cauți?

No, I haven't seen any finished work yet, but I liked the woodcut idea too. It seems more direct and handy than I thought, especially when you transfer Kordis' drawing directly to the wood. Have you tried making one at home after those pictures?

Yes, Kordis's drawings are very clean and have that rhythm that is beautifully transferred to the wood. I saw a similar work in lipovina last year at a celebration here in Belgrade, except that it was a smaller format, so it looked even finer. Jelena, try that cross, it doesn't have to be perfect right away - wood forgives mistakes.
