Ecumenical Patriarch presides over Funeral of Professor Ioanna Koutsouradi

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew presided over the funeral service of the late Ioanna Koutsouradi, a distinguished university professor of philosophy, on Sunday, October 4, 2026.

The funeral was held at the Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord at the Şişli Cemetery in Istanbul.

In his eulogy, the Ecumenical Patriarch paid tribute to the late professor’s personality and academic contribution, highlighting her work in promoting philosophy and human rights through her teaching, research and publications.

Metropolitan Maximos of Ioannina, Metropolitan Andreas of Forty Churches, Metropolitan Grigorios of Ankara and Bishop Veniamin of Tralleis prayerfully attended the funeral.

Also present were clergy, Archons of the Great Church of Christ, members of the Greek Orthodox community, as well as numerous university colleagues and former students of the late Professor Koutsouradi.

May her memory be eternal. I didn't know her work but the fact that the Patriarch himself presided at the Şişli Cemetery service says a lot about the respect she earned. Interesting that so many of her former students showed up too.
