He was not laid in a golden cradle, not on soft pillows, dressed not in delicate fabrics, but in a manger where there was hay - the food of livestock. He did not come for earthly honors, but to suffer for us. And what would these purple and sparkles of gold mean before the greatness of God’s love?! Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ. The author of the painting is Vasily Petrovich Vereshchagin (1835–1909). Vereshchagin was a teacher of the history class at the Academy of Arts. He worked a lot on the design of churches and cathedrals under construction (for example, he made sketches of mosaics for St. Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg, icons for the main iconostasis of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow).
