Matthew 12:1. At that time Jesus passed through the sown fields on the Sabbath; His disciples became hungry and began to pick the ears of corn and eat.
We also read from another evangelist that they felt hunger as people, because due to extreme inconvenience they did not have time to taste food (Mark 2:23; Luke 6:1). That they ground ears of grain with their own hands to appease hunger, this indicates the severity of their lifestyle; they are not looking for artificially prepared meat, but only for simple grains of bread.
Matthew 12:2. When the Pharisees saw this, they said to Him, Behold, Your disciples are doing what ought not to be done on the Sabbath.
Note that the Savior’s apostles are the first to destroy the letter of the law, contrary to the opinion of the Ebionites, who reject Paul as a transgressor of the law, although they accept the rest of the apostles.
Matthew 12:3–4. He said to them: Have you not read what David did when he and those with him were hungry? how did he enter the house of God and eat the showbread, which neither he nor those who were with him were to eat, but only the priests?
To refute the blasphemy of the Pharisees, He recalls an ancient event - when David, avoiding danger from Saul, arrived in Nobe and, received by the high priest Ahimelech, asked for bread; and this one, not having ordinary bread (laicos cibos - bread of the laity), gave him consecrated bread, which only the priests and Levites were allowed to eat (1 Samuel 21:1-6). He only asked: were the youths [David’s squad] clean from touching women; and when David replied that [this did not happen] neither the day before nor the third day, the high priest did not hesitate to give bread, preferring, as the prophet says: “I want mercy, not sacrifice” (Hos. 6:6), to free people from danger due to hunger to sacrifice to God; for the salvation of people is a godly sacrifice.
Therefore, the Lord objects and says, as it were, like this: “If David is holy, if the high priest Ahimelech is not condemned by you, and yet both transgressed the commandment of the law on the basis of only probable justification, and if the reason for this was hunger, then why do you not recognize the same hunger as a sufficient justification for the apostles, recognizing it as such among others? although in this respect there is a great difference. These rub the ears of corn with their hands, and they eat the bread of the Levites, and the days of the new moon were added to the Sabbath festival, during which David fled from the royal palace from being wanted during the festive feast (1 Samuel 20). Pay attention to the fact that neither David nor his youth companions received the loaves before they answered that they were clean from touching women.
Matthew 12:5. Or have you not read in the law that on the Sabbath the priests in the church break the Sabbath, but are innocent.
He says: “You curse My disciples because they, walking through the fields, ground the ears of grain, although they did this out of hunger, while you yourself violate the Sabbath by making sacrifices, slaying bulls and making burnt offerings at the stake; and according to the false testimony of another Gospel (John 7:22), by circumcising children on the Sabbath, so that when you want to maintain another law, you are breaking the law of the Sabbath. But God's laws never contradict themselves. When His disciples could be convicted of breaking the law, He wisely points out to them that His disciples followed the example of David and Ahimelech, and among themselves, the slandering disciples, He notes the actual violation of the Sabbath without need.
Matthew 12:6. But I tell you that here is He who is greater than the church.
The word hie (here) is not a pronoun, but an adverb of place. [The meaning is]: the place in which the Lord of the church is located is greater than [the] church itself.
Matthew 12:7. If you knew what it means: I want mercy, not sacrifice (Hos. 6:6), you would not condemn the innocent.
We said above what it means: “I want mercy 242, and not sacrifice.” And the following words: “they would not condemn the innocent,” 243 must be understood in relation to the apostles. The meaning of the verse is this: If you approve of the mercy of Ahimelech in that he strengthened the strength of David and his youths, who was exhausted from hunger, then why do you condemn My disciples, who did nothing of the kind?
Matthew 12:9. [beginning of the 10th] And He departed from there and entered their synagogue. And behold [came before Him], there was a man who had a withered hand.”
This man is the third one to be healed in the synagogue. And it should be noted that the withered hand was made healthy not on the way, not outside the house, but in the meeting place of the Jews.
Matthew 12:10. [end] And they asked Jesus, [this in order] to accuse Him: is it possible to heal on the Sabbath?
Since He gave a satisfactory example (probabili exemplo) to justify the violation of the Sabbath, which the Pharisees accused His disciples of; then they want to expose Him; they ask: “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath days,” in order to accuse Him of hardness of heart or impotence if He did not heal the sick, or of breaking the Sabbath [law] if He healed him.
Matthew 12:11–12. He said to them: Which of you, having one sheep, if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will not take it and pull it out? How much better is a man than a sheep! So you can do good on Saturdays.
He resolves the proposed question in such a way that he accuses the questioners themselves of stinginess. If you, He says, rush on the Sabbath to pull out a sheep and any animal that has fallen into a ditch, having in your thoughts not the animal, but your own stinginess, then how much more should I free the man who is much greater than the sheep?
Matthew 12:13. Then he says to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” And he held out, and she became healthy, like anyone else.
In the Gospel used by the Nazarenes and Ebionites (which we recently translated from Hebrew into Greek and which is called by many the original Gospel of Matthew), this man with a withered hand is called a mason; he allegedly asked for help in these words: “I was a mason who earned his livelihood by the labor of his hands. O Jesus! I ask you to restore my health so that I don’t have to humiliately beg for food for myself.” In the synagogue of the Jews, before the coming of the Savior, the hand was dry, and the works of God were not revealed in it; but after His coming to earth, it was restored in the apostles who discovered faith and returned to its former actions.
Matthew 12:14. The Pharisees went out and had a council against Him, how to destroy Him.
That they are plotting against the Lord, the reason for this is malice; Indeed, what did He do to provoke the Pharisees to destroy Him? After all, only that the person extended his hand. But which of the Pharisees did not stretch out their hands on the Sabbath day to carry food, give a cup, and other things necessary for life? So, if reaching out and picking up food and drink on the Sabbath does not constitute a crime, then why do they convict in another that which they themselves can be convicted of, and especially when this mason did not hold anything of the kind in his hand, but extended only one hand at the command of the Lord?
Matthew 12:15–17. [end of 14th] But when Jesus found out, he withdrew from there. And a great multitude followed him, and he healed them all, and forbade them to declare him, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet Isaiah, who spake.
Knowing their machinations, knowing that they wanted to destroy their Savior, He withdrew from there in order to deprive the Pharisees of the opportunity to commit an ungodly deed against Him.
Matthew 12:18. [and beginning of the 19th]: Behold, My Servant, whom I have chosen, My Beloved, in whom My soul delights. I will put My spirit on Him, and He will proclaim judgment to the nations; He will not contradict, he will not cry out.
This is said through Isaiah the prophet on behalf of the Father: “I will put My spirit on Him” (Is. 42:1-2). The Spirit does not rely on the word of God and not on the Only Begotten, who came from the bosom of the Father, but on Him about whom it is said: Behold My Child.
Matthew 12:19. [end]: And he won’t let him be heard on the streets.
Indeed, broad and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many walk along it (Matthew 7:13). These many will not hear the Savior, because they are not on the narrow, but on the broad path.
Matthew 12:20–21. He will not break a bruised reed, nor quench the smoking flax, until he brings victory to the court; and in His name the nations will trust.
He who does not stretch out his hand to the sinner and does not bear the burden of his brother, [he] breaks the bruised reed. And the one who despises the weak spark of faith in these little ones, [he] quenches the smoking flax. Christ did neither one nor the other, for He came to save the lost.
Matthew 12:22–24. Then they brought to Him a man possessed by a demon, blind and dumb; and he healed him, so that the blind and dumb man began to speak and see. And all the people marveled and said, Is this not the Christ, the son of David? The Pharisees, having heard this, said: He does not cast out demons except by the power of Beelzebub, the prince of demons.
Three signs were revealed over the same person: the blind man sees, the dumb man speaks, and the one who was in the power of a demon is freed. It is true that then it happened in a carnal way; but this is also fulfilled daily in the conversion of believers; so that after the demon is cast out, they initially understand the light of faith, and then the lips that were previously silent are opened to glorify God.
Matthew 12:25. But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said to them: Every kingdom divided against itself will be desolate; and every city or house divided against itself cannot stand.
The crowds of people were amazed and confessed that the one who performed such signs was the Son of David; and the Pharisees attributed the works of God to the leader of demons. The Lord answers them not to their words, but to their thoughts, so that at least in this way they would be encouraged to believe in Him who contemplated the secrets of the heart.
Matthew 12:26. And if Satan casts out Satan, then he is divided with himself: how can his kingdom stand?
A city and a kingdom rebelling against themselves cannot stand firm; But just as small things grow through mutual agreement, the greatest things lose their power through enmity. So, if Satan rebels against himself and if the demon is the enemy of demons, then the end of the world must already have come, so that hostile forces no longer have a place in it, the enmity of which among themselves is peace for people. But if you, scribes and Pharisees, imagine that the removal of demons is their obedience to their prince, in order to mock the ignorant people through deceptive pretense, then what can you say about the healing of the body that the Lord performed? If you attribute to demons the infirmities of the members of the body and the manifestations of spiritual powers, then this [healing of the body] is something else.
Matthew 12:27. And if I cast out demons by the power of Beelzebub, by what power do your sons cast them out? And therefore they themselves will appear as your judges 245
By sons He means 246 or in general the exorcists of this people, or the apostles who came from the tribe of the Jews. If He means exorcists who cast out demons 247 by invoking the name of God, then by His wise question He forces them to confess that this is the work of the Holy Spirit. If, He says, in your sons the expulsion of demons 248 is attributed not to demons 249, but to God, then why in Me the same act is not a consequence of the Same Cause. Therefore they themselves will be your judges, not because of the power to pronounce judgment on you, but because of the comparison: while they attribute the casting out of demons to God, you attribute the same thing to Beelzebub, the prince of demons. If this is said about the apostles, which we must first of all see here, then they will also be their judges, because they will sit on twelve thrones to judge the twelve tribes of Israel (Matthew 19:28; Luke 22:30).
Matthew 12:28. - If by the Spirit of God I cast out demons.
This passage, recorded in Luke, reads like this: “If by the finger of God I cast out demons” (Luke 11:20). This is the finger that the wise men confess, who performed miracles before Moses and Aaron, when they said: “This is the finger of God” (Ex. 8:19); this is the finger with which the stone tablets (boards) on Mount Sinai were written (Deut. 9). So, although the hand of God is the Son, and the finger of God is the Holy Spirit, yet the essence of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit is one, and do not let the inequality of members offend you, when the unity of the body teaches [you].
Then, of course, the Kingdom of God has reached you.
With these words He means either Himself, about whom it is written in another place: “The kingdom of God is within you” (Luke 17:21) and “there is someone standing among you whom you do not know” (John 1:26); or, perhaps, the Kingdom that John and the Lord Himself preached: “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand” (Matthew 3:2). There is also the Third Kingdom of the Holy Scriptures, which is taken away from the Jews and given to the people who bear the fruits thereof (Matthew 21:43).
Matthew 12:29. Or how can anyone enter the house of a strong man and plunder his things, unless he first binds the strong man? and then he will plunder his house
Or how can someone enter the house of a strong man and steal his vessels, if he does not first bind the strong man, and then plunder his house. – We should not be carefree: that our enemy is strong, this is also proven by [his] victorious cliques. His house is the whole world, which lies in evil (John 5:19), which does not depend on the quality (dignitate) of the Creator, but on the great crimes of the enemy. We were once his vessels. The strong one [is now] bound and chained to the pit and trampled under the foot of the Lord, and after the destruction of the thrones of the cruel ruler his captivity was taken captive.
Matthew 12:31. Therefore I say to you: every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven to men, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven (spiritus autem, blasphemiae non remittetur) to men.
Let no one think that this word refers to heretics and schismatics (although, of course, it may be understood that way); based on the connection between speech and further words, it must be attributed to the devil, because the actions of the Savior cannot be compared with the actions of Beelzebub: he wants to keep the souls of people in captivity, and the Lord wants to free them; he preaches idols, and the Lord preaches the knowledge of one God; he attracts to vices, but the Lord calls to virtues. Therefore, how can there be agreement between those who are divided in their deeds?
Matthew 12:32. If anyone speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; if anyone speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the next.
How is it that some of our people again accept bishops and presbyters into the same rank after they have uttered blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, when the Savior says: every sin and blasphemy is forgiven to men, but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, neither in this age nor in the future? It is enough if we take only the famous example from the Gospel of Mark 250, which more clearly expressed the reasons for such great wrath [of God], saying: “For they affirmed that He had an unclean spirit” (Mark 3:22). 251 So, whoever attributes the works of the Savior to Beelzebub, the prince of demons, and says that the Son of God has an unclean spirit, his blasphemy will never be forgiven.
On the other hand, this passage can be understood as follows: if anyone speaks a word against the Son of Man, being offended by My flesh and considering Me only a man, because I am the son of a craftsman, and I have brothers: Jacob, Joseph and Judas, and I am a man who eats a lot and drinks wine; then such an opinion and slander [or: without slander 252] due to the frailty of the body can be forgiven, although it is not free from the guilt inherent in error (Mark 6:3; Luke 3:23; Matthew 11:19). And the one who, clearly seeing the works of God and not being able to reject their power, slanders them only, prompted by envy, and recognizes Christ, the Word of God, and the works of the Holy Spirit as Beelzebub’s, he will not receive forgiveness either in the present age or in the future.
Matthew 12:33. Or recognize the tree as good and its fruit as good; or recognize the tree as bad and its fruit as bad, for a tree is known by its fruit.
He astonishes them with a conclusion that the Greeks call ά φυκτον, and we can call “inevitable”; He, as it were, locks those questioned on both sides and amazes with both positions. If the devil is an evil being, then he cannot do good deeds. If the deeds that you see are good, then it follows that it is not the devil who does them. Indeed, it cannot be that good comes from evil and evil from good. And then the following words:
Matthew 12:34. Progeny [offspring] of vipers! how can you say good things when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks
He shows that they are an evil tree and bear such abundant fruits of slander as the seeds of the devil have in them.
Matthew 12:35. A good man brings good things out of a good treasure, and an evil man brings evil things out of an evil treasure.
He points either to the Jews themselves, who slander the Lord, saying from what treasury they carry out blasphemies, or here the idea is connected with the previous question that just as a good tree cannot produce bad fruits, and a bad tree cannot produce good fruits, so Christ cannot do evil deeds, and the devil cannot do good.
Matthew 12:36–37. I tell you that for every idle word that people speak, they will give an answer on the day of judgment: for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.
This saying is also related to the above. And the meaning is this: if an idle word, which does not serve to edify those who listen, does not remain without danger for the one who speaks, and if on the Day of Judgment everyone will be rewarded for their words; then much more, you who blaspheme the works of the Holy Spirit and say that I cast out demons in the name of Beelzebub, give an account of your blasphemies: an idle word is a word spoken not for the benefit of the speaker and the listener, when we, leaving what is important, talk about empty things and tell ancient fables. But the one who engages in buffoonery and excites others to laughter, and utters something shameful, is guilty of uttering not an idle, but a criminal word.
Matthew 12:38. Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said: Teacher! We would like to see a sign from You.
So they ask for a sign, as if the signs they had already seen were not signs. But another evangelist explains more fully what they want to see: “We want to see a sign from You from heaven” (Mark 8:11). 253 Perhaps they wanted fire to come down from on high, as in the time of Elijah, or perhaps, as in the time of Samuel, they wanted lightning to flash, thunder to roar, and rain to fall in torrents in the summer, contrary to the natural features of the place; as if the Pharisees could not blaspheme similar signs, claiming that they come from various unknown disturbances of the air, because you, who utter blasphemies against what you see with your eyes, hold with your hands and recognize as useful, what can’t you say about what came from heaven? Of course, you will say that the wise men in Egypt also performed many signs from heaven (Ex. 7).
Matthew 12:39. But He answered and said to them, “An evil and adulterous generation.”
An excellent expression: “adulterous,” because this race left the Husband and, as Ezekiel says, entered into a relationship with many lovers (Ezek. 16).
Matthew 12:40. [continuation of the 39th and 40th]: Seeks a sign; and no sign will be given to him except the sign of the prophet Jonah (Jonah 2) for just as Jonah was in the belly of the whale for three days and three nights, so the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights.
We discussed this place in more detail in the Commentaries on the book of the prophet Jonah, therefore we refer the diligent reader to this place; and now we considered it sufficient to say briefly about this - namely, that here, according to a special way of speaking [which in books on eloquence is known under the name “synecdoche”], the whole is used instead of the part: this does not mean that the Lord spent three whole days and three nights in the underworld, but only that He spent part of Friday and Sunday and the whole day of Saturday, which should be understood by three days and as many nights.
Matthew 12:41. The Ninevites will rise up in judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented from the preaching of Jonah.
[They will condemn] not according to the power to pronounce judgment, but according to their superiority in comparison with them.
And now, there's more Jonah here.
Understand the Latin word hic in the sense of an adverb (here), and not in the sense of a pronoun. According to the text of the Seventy, the prophet Jonah preached [only] for three days; and I [preach] for such a long time: Jonah - before the unbelieving Assyrians, and I - to the Jews, the people of God; he - to strangers, and I - to compatriots, he - with simple speech, without performing any miracles; and I, who perform so many miracles, am subject to curses like Beelzebub. So here, that is, in what is happening among you, there is more than Jonah.
Matthew 12:42. The queen of the south will rise up in judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, there is more Solomon here.
The Queen of the South will judge the people of Judah in the same way that the Ninevites will judge unfaithful Israel. And this is that queen Saba [Sheba], about whom we read in the scroll of Kings and Chronicles (1 Kings 10:2; 2 Chronicles 9); She, despite so many difficulties, leaving her people and kingdom, came to Judea to listen to the wisdom of Solomon, and brought him many gifts. However, under the name of Nineveh and Queen Saba, the faith of the pagans is secretly preferred to the faith of the people of Israel.
Matthew 12:43. [beginning of 44th] When the unclean spirit comes out of a person, it walks through dry places, looking for rest, and does not find it; then he speaks.”
Some think that this is said about heretics, because the unclean spirit that previously dwelt in them - when they were still pagans - is cast out during their confession of faith, and then, when they turn into heresy and decorate their house with feigned virtues, the devil, in conjunction with seven other evil spirits, returns to them and dwells in them; and their last state is worse than the first, because heretics are in a much worse position than pagans: among the latter one can hope for the emergence of faith, while in the former there is strife due to disagreement.
Although this understanding has many supporters (quemdam plausum some applause) and bears the features of correct teaching, I do not know whether it is correct, since from the words that follow at the end of this comparison, or example: “So it will be with this evil generation” (Matthew 12:45), it follows that we must necessarily attribute this passage (parabola) not to heretics and any other people, but to the Jewish people, so the connection of speech this passage does not allow arbitrary violent interpretation this way or that way and distortion according to the custom of unreasonable people; this connection quite consistently corresponds to either the previous words or the subsequent ones. The unclean spirit came out of the Jews when they accepted the law, and wandered through the waterless desert, seeking peace for itself - namely: expelled from among the Jews, he wandered through the desert of the pagan peoples; when the latter later believed in the Lord, he, not finding a place for himself among other nations, said:
Matthew 12:44. [continued]: I will return to my house from where I came.
That is, I will go to the Jews whom I left before.
Matthew 12:44–45. [end of 44th] And, having arrived, he finds it unoccupied, swept and put away; then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more evil than himself, and entering they live there; and for that person the last thing is worse than the first. So it will be with this evil generation.
Indeed, the Jewish church was free and did not have Christ as a [sort of] guest, for He said: “Arise, let us go from here” (John 14:31) and in another place: “Behold, your house is left to you empty” (Luke 13:35). And since they had no protection either from God or from the angels and were adorned with excessive observance of the law and Pharisees' traditions, then the devil returns to his former place of residence and, having added to himself a sevenfold number of demons, lives in his former house; and the last state of this people is worse than before, for now they are in the power of a greater number of demons - uttering blasphemies against Jesus Christ in their assemblies - than they were in Egypt, that is, before the knowledge of the law. In fact, it is another thing not to have faith in Him who is to come, and another thing not to accept Him who has already come.
And understand the seven-fold number of spirits in connection with the devil either in relation to the Sabbath, or in relation to the [seven-fold] number of the Holy Spirit; so that, as the prophet Isaiah tells us, above the branch from the root of Jesse and above the flower that rises from the root, appear the seven virtues of the Spirit (Is. 11:1-3). 255, so in the devil, on the contrary, the number of vices is determined (conse-cratus sit).
Matthew 12:46–49. While He was still speaking to the people, His Mother and brothers stood outside the house, wanting to speak with Him. And someone said to Him: Behold, Your Mother and Your brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak with You. He answered and said to the one who spoke: Who is My Mother? and who are my brothers? And pointing His hand at His disciples, He said.
The Lord was busy preaching, teaching the nations, serving the word: and His Mother and brothers came up, stood at the door, outside the house, and expressed a desire to speak with Him. Then someone will know the Savior that His Mother and brothers are standing near the house 256, asking about Him. It seems to me that this one who proclaims to the Lord does not do this by chance or simply; but he is plotting intrigues against the Savior in order to test whether He will prefer flesh and blood to spiritual affairs. Therefore, the Lord refused to go out, but not because He denied the Mother and brothers, but because He gave an answer to the evil one: He, stretching out his hand to the disciples, said:
Matthew 12:49–50. [end of 49th] Here are My Mother and My brothers; for whoever does the will of My Father in Heaven is My brother, and sister, and mother
Those are My mother who daily give birth to Me in the souls of believers; These are My brothers who do the works of My Father. So, He did not deny His Mother, as Marcion and Manichaeus believed, so that they would think that He was born from some imaginary being. He only preferred the apostles to His half-blooded ones, so that in our love we too would give comparative preference to the spirit over the body. “Behold Your Mother and Your brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak with You.” Some interpreters by the brothers of the Lord mean the sons of Joseph from his second wife, following the nonsense of the hidden books (apocryphorum) and thinking about a certain woman Melcha or Elka. We, as they say in the book we wrote against Helvidius, by the brothers of the Lord we mean not the sons of Joseph, but the cousins of the Savior, the sons of Mary, the aunt of the Lord by His Mother; she, they say, was the mother of James the Younger, Joseph and Judas, who, as we read in another Gospel (Mark 6:3; Matt. 13:55; John 2:12) 257 are called the brothers of the Lord. And that maternal cousins are called brothers, this is shown by the entire Holy Scripture.
– Let’s explain this place in another way. The Lord speaks to a multitude of people; He teaches people inside [the house]. His mother and brothers, that is, the synagogue and the Jewish people, stand outside and want to enter, but they become unworthy of His word. Although they asked, and sought, and sent a messenger, they received the answer that they were free and could enter if only they themselves wanted to believe. However, they could not enter except at the request of others.
