2 Ezra 9:1 And Ezra arose from the porch of the church and went to the dwelling of Jonan the son of Eliasi,
1. Art. 1–36 present an exposition of 1Ezra X:6–44.
2Ezra 9:2 And while he remained there, he did not eat bread or drink water, grieving over the great iniquities of the people.
2Ezra 9:3 And there was a cry throughout all Judea and Jerusalem to all who had returned from captivity, to gather themselves to Jerusalem;
2Ezra 9:4 And those who do not appear within two or three days, their property will be taken away from them by the judgment of the presiding elders, and they themselves will be alienated from the host of those who were in captivity.
2Ezra 9:5 And in three days all they that were of the tribe of Judah and Benjamin were assembled in Jerusalem: this was in the ninth month, on the twentieth day of the same month.
5. This was in the ninth month, that is, in the month of Kislev, corresponding to our December.
2Ezra 9:6 And all the people sat in the courtyard of the church, trembling because of the coming winter.
2 Ezra 9:7 Ezra stood up and said to them, “You have committed iniquity and live with foreign women, bringing sins upon Israel.”
2Ezra 9:8 Therefore now give confession and glory to the Lord, the God of our fathers,
2Ezra 9:9 And do His will, and separate yourself from the nations of the earth and from the foreign women!
2Ezra 9:10 And the whole congregation cried out, and said with a loud voice, As thou hast said, so we will do.
2Ezra 9:11 But the multitude is large, and the time is winter, and we are not able to stand in the open air, and this is not a matter for us of one day or two days, for we have sinned very much in this:
2Ezra 9:12 Therefore let rulers be appointed over the congregation, and let all those from our villages who have foreign wives come to them in due time
12. The meeting proposes that only the chiefs remain in Jerusalem, who should be entrusted with the investigation of mixed marriages. – In due time: Greek. λαβόντες χρόνον, “choosing a time,” and also (v. 13) “taking the elders and judges of every place.”
2Ezra 9:13 with the elders and judges of every place, until the wrath of God for this matter is turned away from us.
2Ezra 9:14 And Jonathan the son of Asahel, and Hezekiah the son of Theokana, took upon themselves this, and Mesullam and Levis and Shebbathai assisted them.
14. Wed. 1Ride X:15 . Instead of Hezekiah, the son of Theokana, in 1 Rides it is called Jahzeiah, the son of Fiqua. The words Levis and Sabbatai in 1 Ezra correspond to: “and Shabfai the Levite.” It is not clear what the duties of these persons were. Since, in fact, for the study of the case of mixed marriages, as can be seen from Art. 16–17, the persons chosen by Ezra himself, then, apparently, named in v. 14 persons were doing something else, perhaps taking upon themselves the responsibility of communicating with those coming to Jerusalem.
2Ezra 9:15 And those who returned from captivity did according to all these things.
2 Ezra 9:16 And Ezra the priest chose for himself the chief ancestors, all by name, and they came together on the new moon of the tenth month to investigate the matter.
16. And Ezra the priest chose for himself. In 1Ezra X the matter is presented differently: Ezra himself was chosen along with other persons. Thought 16th Art. arose, apparently, from an erroneous reading of 1Ezra X:16.
2Ezra 9:17 And the study of husbands who kept foreign wives with them was brought to an end at the new moon of the first month.
2Ezra 9:18 And among the priests who were assembled there were found that had foreign wives:

2Ezra 9:20 who gave their hands to cast away their wives and offered rams as an atonement for their sin;

22. The sons of Kharim, named in 1Edra X in 2Edra are omitted. Of the sons of Pashkur (Tesur), instead of Jozabad and Elas (1Ezra X:22), they are called Okodil and Saloah.
2 Ezra 9:23 and from the Levites - Jozabad and Shimeis and Koli, who is Kalita, and Patheus and Judah and Jonah;

2Ezra 9:35 And of the sons of Ethmah, Mazitiah, Zabadi, Idean, Jeuel, and Benaiah.
34–35. Wed 1Ezra X:34–43, where there are other names.
2Ezra 9:36 All these dwelt with foreign wives, and sent them away with their children.
2Ezra 9:37 And on the new moon of the seventh month the priests and the Levites and the Israelites who were in Jerusalem and in the region thereof, and the children of Israel dwelt in their places.
37. From Art. 37 and to the end follows the exposition of Nehemiah VII, 73-VIII, 13. - On the new moon of the seventh month, i.e. the month of Tisri.
2Ezra 9:38 And all the people were gathered together with one accord in the space before the east gate of the church,
38. Before the eastern gate of the church - according to Neh VIII, 1 before the Water Gate.
2Ezra 9:39 And they told Ezra the priest and reader that he should bring the law of Moses, which was given from the Lord God of Israel.
2 Ezra 9:40 And Ezra the high priest brought out the law to all the people, from man to woman, and to all the priests, that they should hear the law, on the new moon of the seventh month,
2Ezra 9:41 And he read it to them in the space before the gate of the church from morning until noon in the presence of men and women, and all the people heard the law.
2 Ezra 9:42 And Ezra the priest and reader stood on the wooden platform that had been prepared;
2Ezra 9:43 And before him stood on the right side Mattathiah, Sammus, Hananiah, Azariah, Uriah, Hezekiah and Baalsam,
2 Ezra 9:44 and on the left are Phaldei and Mishael, Melchiah, Aophasub, Navariah, Zechariah.
43–44. Wed. Nehemiah VIII.4, 8 v. 43–44 are indicated, as in Nehemiah VIII.4, 13 names of the persons who stood near Ezra: seven on the right side and six on the left. According to the book Nehemiah - there were seven on the left side and six on the right.
2 Ezra 9:45 And Ezra took the book of the law before the people, and sat down with glory before them all;
2Ezra 9:46 And when he explained the law, they all stood upright; and Ezra blessed the Lord God Most High, the God of Hosts, the Almighty.
2Ezra 9:47 And all the people cried out: Amen! and, raising their hands up and falling to the ground, they worshiped the Lord.
2Ezra 9:48 Also Joshua, and Anniuth, and Sarabia, and Jadin, and Jacob, and Shebathia, and Abthea, and Meanna, and Kalita, and Azariah, and Jozabed, and Hananiah, and Phaliah, the Levites, taught the law of the Lord, and read the law of the Lord before the people, and explained the reading.
2 Ezra 9:49 And Atpharath said to Ezra the high priest and reader, and to the Levites who taught the people, to all:
49. And Atpharat said to Ezra. According to Nehemiah VIII.9: “Then Nehemiah, who is also Tirshatha, and the scribe Ezra spoke to the people.”
2Ezra 9:50 This day is holy to the Lord, and they all wept while they heard the law;
2Ezra 9:51 Go and eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and give alms to the poor,

2Ezra 9:53 And the Levites also warned all the people, saying, This day is holy; do not mourn.
2Ezra 9:54 And they all went out to eat and drink and be merry, and give alms to the poor, and they had a lot of fun,
2Ezra 9:55 For they were imbued with the words which were taught in the congregation.
55. At the end of Art. 55 in Russian The words are not translated in the text: καί έπισυνηλθησαν, “and they gathered together.” This word indicates that the book ends in mid-phrase, therefore Vulg. adds: “universi in Hierusalem celebrate lactitiam secundum testamentum Domini, Dei Israil.” I. Flavius (Ant. XI, 5, 5), following in his story about Ezra in the book under consideration, reports that the people, after the events described, fasted for 8 days and then everyone returned to their homes, singing hymns to God and giving thanks to Ezra for his labors, and that Ezra died in old age and was buried in Jerusalem. There is no reason to assert that this information was ever at the end of Ezra, and was not borrowed by Josephus from tradition.
