John Bishop Gifts in Mesopotamia, Jacob, lived in the first half of the 9th century. and was a contemporary of Dionysius of Tell-Mahr (about him, see V. Wright, A Brief Essay on Syriac Literature, translated by K. A. Turaeva, 138 - 143, etc.), who dedicated a lengthy edition of his chronicle to him. The following works remained from him: 1) four books on the resurrection of the dead (see Frosingham, Stephen bar Sudaili, Leyden 1886, p. 66); 2) two books about the hierarchy of heaven and church, based on the work of the same name by pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite; 3) four books on the priesthood (see Zingerle in “Theol. Quartalschrift” 1867, 183–205; 1868, 267–285; extract from books II and IV in Monum. Syr. I, 105–110, from IV - in Overbeck, Ephraemi Syri etc. Opera selecta, Oxonii 1865, 409–413); 4) a book about the soul and 5) liturgy.
