The holy martyrs of Christ Markian and Nikander with their retinue came from Egypt. For their faith in Christ, they were captured by order of the ruler of the region, and they were forced to renounce Christ and worship idols, but they did not agree to this. Then they were first brutally beaten, then they burned their ribs with candles and, finally, hanging them, they whittled them with iron claws until the torn pieces of their bodies began to fall to the ground. After this, they were imprisoned, barely alive, but in prison the Angel of the Lord appeared to them and healed them. After many days, they came out of prison healthy and again appeared in court before the ruler of the region. Seeing these miracles, many of the pagans turned to faith in the true God. At the trial of the ruler, the holy martyrs were again sentenced to imprisonment and here, tormented by hunger and thirst, they died in 3663. The exact year of death of the holy martyrs is unknown. The Right Reverend Philaret (“Lives of the Saints,” June, p. 31) dates the year of their death to the reign of Maximus, who in 305 received supreme power over Syria and Egypt and cruelly persecuted Christians in his domains.
