The holy martyr and confessor of Christ George was born in the city of Constantinople. For worshiping honest icons and venerating them, he was captured by iconoclasts and brought to the wicked emperor Theophilus 3229. The latter, either with threats or with persuasion, began to force him to renounce Christ and the worship of holy icons, but the saint did not agree to this. Outraged by the vile and deceitful words of the tormentor, he told him: “Every true Christian should worship honest icons and honor them, since their veneration transfers to the prototype.” For such words, they tied a rope around Saint George’s neck and began to drag him through the streets of the city like a villain, then they imprisoned him and, finally, having taken away and plundered all his property, together with his wife Irina and children they sent him into exile, where, having endured many disasters, he joyfully went to the Lord 3230. The Byzantine Emperor Theophilus, the son and successor of Emperor Michael II, under the influence of his teacher John the Grammar, imbued with a strong aversion to icons from childhood, cruelly persecuted icon-venerators, although he did not put them to death.
