The Monk Puplius, in the rank of monk, labored in Egypt in 2409 during the reign of Emperor Julian the Apostate in 2410. When this wicked emperor prepared to go to war against the Persians, he sent the devil towards the east, as if as a spy, ordering him to scout out the route along which Julian’s army was supposed to go. Having set off, the devil reached the place where the Monk Puplius labored, but here he stopped and stayed for ten days, not being able to move; The reason for this was that the Monk Puplius, having learned in spirit about the arrival of the devil in his country, began to pray, and prayed with his hands up, day and night, without resting, until the devil departed back from that country 2411. Thus, the devil, not learning anything, returned to Julian. Julian asked him: - Why did you spend so long on the road? “Although I was on the road for a long time, I came to you without scouting or learning anything; I waited for ten days for the monk Puplius to finish his prayer so that I could pass the place where this monk was staying, but without waiting for anything, I returned back. Then the wicked emperor Julian, angry, said to the devil: “When I return from the war, I will take revenge on that monk.” But Julian did not have time to fulfill his lawless plan, because soon after he said these words, he was killed by the invisible power of God. After this, one of Julian’s military leaders, having sold all his property and distributed the proceeds to the poor, came to the Monk Puplius and, having taken monastic vows, began to strive with him. This monk was very successful in virtues, leading a strictly ascetic life. The Monk Puplius labored for quite a long time after this, and finally, having pleased God with his virtuous life, he departed from this life into the eternal heavenly abodes 2412. Egypt was the usual habitat of many ascetics. Monastic monasteries were located in both Lower and Middle Egypt. The Nitrian desert, located in Lower Egypt and lying inland, beyond the Nile River, was especially famous in Egypt. Roman Emperor Julian the Apostate reigned from 361 to 363.
