The Monk Thalassius, at a young age, built himself a dwelling on a mountain and settled in it. Distinguished by nature for his sincerity and humility, he soon felt drawn to monastic deeds. He retired to the top of a mountain located near the village of Targala, and spent 38 years on it in labors, and had no dwelling: no cell, no tent, or even any kind of canopy, but, having built only a small fence of stones and having only the sky as a cover, he remained in it all the time. For such feats, the Lord honored the holy ascetic with the grace of miracles. The Monk Thalassius cast out demons, healed various diseases, and by the power of his miraculous gift became like the holy Apostles. One day a snake attacked him and wanted to devour him, but he prayed and through prayer saved himself from death. Another time, he suffered from a stomach illness, which caused him severe suffering, but he called on the name of God and thereby was healed from a painful illness. Many people always flocked to the monk to see his exploits, and many of those who came asked him to accept them as his companions. The monk did not resist such requests. Having built cells for those who wanted to asceticize with him, he allowed them to live in them, and distributed to them the food that his admirers brought for him from different places.
