Jer. 30:2. This is what the Lord says. So I am confident, he says, in the prediction that I wish it to be written down, which will especially be shown by its fulfillment. Jer. 30:5. You will hear the voice of fear. Fear destroys all strength. God’s love for mankind is great not only because it subjects people to disasters, but also because disasters instill fear: they will test the weakness of women. And this produces fear; He is admonished not by himself, but by his neighbors. Jer. 30:7. What a great day it is. Great in the extremeness of the calamity, and nothing like it. Said hyperbolically, and time is tight. This is not a prophecy, but a fulfillment. Jer. 30:8. I will crush you with a yoke. They will, however, get rid of inevitable troubles. Jer. 30:8. And they won't serve. How do they serve God? When the firstfruits are brought; this happens with us too. When we do not work for God, we bring fruit from the flesh not to Him, but to the passions of the soul, like those to idols; another punishment remains. What could be more sacred than when the glorious ones who had boldness in God, (like) Zerubbabel, will receive from God that great adornment that will be called by the name of David! Jer. 30:12. I will restore the contrition. Just as if a master hands over one of his servants who has committed an offense to the executioner, and when the latter punishes the person handed over beyond measure, more than the master thought, then the handover, having come, almost defends himself before the punished, showing that this was not done according to his desire and, having carefully learned about his wounds, promises to punish him severely, so does God. Strong – contrition. Do you see Him making excuses for the fact that (he) received a serious wound? This means: “strongly”, not what life should have been, but more than that. Jer. 30:13. No judge. That is, no one took revenge, no one came to the rescue. It is difficult to endure any misfortune, and after suffering it, not having someone to console you is even more difficult. Jer. 30:13. You were treated for illness. Since the captivity brought about, like some kind of medicine, he says (that) the healing caused great sorrow, like that of an unskilled doctor who does not know how to cut well. Jer. 30:16. For this reason all those who eat you. They will endure insults from others; each one will feed his neighbor with his own body; they will endure what they (themselves) have done. Even if there is an unhealable wound, it is not for Me. Jer. 30:17. Like I call you wasteful (ἐσπαρμένη 176). Others say: “girdled” (έζωσμένη), because You punished. The great good is that the vicious and outcasts (ἀπεγνωσμένους) are saved, not through punishment and misfortune from God, but through virtue and repentance. Jer. 30:19. And they will come out of it singing. And what about those who were about to be destroyed? This not only did not make them happy, but also made them sadder. Imagine an old man who hears that things will be fine in seventy years. This is why he stops at this, in order to arouse them more strongly, and to inspire those who are older with hope and make them more reasonable. Look how he speaks about their well-being, service (to God), freedom, that they will be numerous, that they will have legal institutions. This was kind to them. This, he says, will happen; now do not seek it; now is the time for our punishment. Ἐσπαρμένη is also read in ancient times. sp. translation of 70.
