Chapter 1. Every contradiction, although it comes from a friendly and reverent disposition, alienates the one who disagrees from the Lord; every word of the Lord must be accepted with all certainty. (John 13:5-8): “And he began to wash the disciples’ feet and dry them with the towel with which he girded. He approaches Simon Peter, and he says to Him: Lord! Should you wash my feet? Jesus answered and said to him, “What I do you do not know now, but you will understand later.” Peter says to Him: You will never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.” Chapter 2. One should not follow human traditions until one rejects God’s commandments. (Mark 7:5-8): “Then the Pharisees and scribes asked Him: Why do not Your disciples walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashed hands? He answered them: Isaiah prophesied well about you hypocrites, as it is written: This people honors Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me, but in vain they honor Me, teaching doctrines the commandments of men. For you, having abandoned the commandment of God, hold to the tradition of men.” (Isa. 29:13): “For this people draws near to Me with their lips, and honors Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me, and their reverence for Me is the study of the commandments of men.” Chapter 3. It is impermissible to observe everything handed down by the Lord in the Gospel and through the Apostles. (Matthew 28:19-20): “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything that I have commanded you.” (Luke 1:6): “They were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and statutes of the Lord.” (Luke 10:16): “He who listens to you hears Me, and he who rejects you rejects Me.” (2 Thessalonians 2:15): “Therefore, brethren, stand fast and hold to the traditions which you have been taught either by our word or by our epistle.” Chapter 4. One should not prefer one’s own will to the will of the Lord; but in every matter one must seek what the will of God is and fulfill it. (John 5:39): “I do not seek My will, but the will of the Father who sent Me.” (Luke 22:41-42): “And he knelt down and prayed, saying: Father! Oh, that You would deign to carry this cup past Me! however, not My will, but Yours be done.” (Eph. 2:3): “We all once lived according to our carnal lusts, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and the thoughts, and were by nature children of wrath, like others.” You might be interested in:
