One should not prefer one’s own will to the will of the Lord, but in every action one must seek what the will of God is and fulfill it (4). Which soul is directed according to the will of God? She who accepted the offer of the Lord, who said: if anyone wants to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me (Matthew 16:24). For whoever first does not fulfill the command to deny himself and take up the cross, then later finds in himself many obstacles to following Christ (5). Since the apostle sometimes says: do not be foolish (Eph. 5:17), and sometimes: do not dream about yourself (Rom. 12:16), then is it possible for someone who is foolish not to dream about himself? Each command has its own limit. For to the words: do not be unreasonable, he adds: but know what the will of God is, and to the words: do not dream about yourself, he adds: fear the Lord and shun evil (Prov. 3:7). Therefore, anyone who does not understand the will of the Lord is meaningless, but everyone who is led by his own reasoning and does not walk by faith in the words of God dreams of himself. Therefore, whoever wants not to be foolish and dream about himself must understand the will of the Lord by faith in Him and in the fear of God imitate the Apostle, who says: we cast down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and we take into captivity every thought into the obedience of Christ (2 Cor. 10:4, 5) (5).
