Chapter 58

Ps.58:1. In the end, let him not corrupt David to write down the pillars, and Saul sent the ambassador, and guarded his house, to put him to death. Saul, jealous of David, who was his benefactor, sought to kill David, now throwing a spear at him, now surrounding him with guards in the house. But the psalm also refers to the person of the Savior, who benefits the ungrateful Israelites (whom Saul represents) and is persecuted by their slander. He also preaches the good news about the calling of all pagans after Israel is rejected from living according to God for their wickedness. Ps.58:2. Deliver me from my enemies. God. Prays for deliverance from sensory and mental enemies. For they, acting wickedly, hated him. Ps.58:4. Below is my iniquity, below is my sin, Lord. This is similar to what was said: “For you will not commit iniquity, but flattery will be found in His mouth” (Is. 53:9). Ps.58:6. Wonmi visit all languages. He prays that the idolaters will turn to faith in Christ, and that the Israelites will be rejected for their iniquity. “Let not all who practice iniquity have mercy.” Ps.59:7. The reason is that they will form a congregation against the Savior when in the last days He comes into the world with the flesh. They will hunger because they did not receive the life-giving bread. He calls them dogs for their spiritual shamelessness. It is also said: because those deprived of their fatherland and not allowed into it by the royal laws will walk around outside, barely having the opportunity to see it from anywhere from afar. Ps.58:8. These people answer with their lips, that is, they will utter blasphemies. He understands the words: “Take, take, crucify Him” (John 19:15). Ps.58:9. And You, Lord, laugh at them. They blasphemed and plotted even before the crucifixion, saying that God would not see their words and deeds. But although they thought this, You, Lord, will make sure that they will be ridiculed. Although they dare to do so, You hear, and see, and laugh at their vain madness. that is, the mental forces that raised up the Israelites to fight against the Lord. Above he said: “visit all languages,” but here he says: “destroy all languages,” observing a strict order of speech in everything in the continuation of everything that is said in the middle. For, showing that it was not without reason that he asked to punish them, he first asked God to look and examine what had been done, and then he described how they acted, thinking that there was no Provider. Finally, he already mentioned punishment, saying that you will punish them worthily for this, and with your punishment you will turn them into nothing. Ps.58:10. I will preserve my power to You. So they blasphemed before You, but I am a prophet, who speaks this by the Spirit, I will hold my fortress and my kingdom, protected by You, for You became my protector, and before my petitions you girded me with Your mercy, which is why I saw the fall of my enemies. Ps.58:12. Do not kill them, lest they forget Your law. He prays that the race of those who rebelled against the Lord will not be completely destroyed from the people. He asks that it would be better for them to be scattered and live in captivity for Ps.58:13. for the sin of their lips, and for their pride. And from oaths and lies will be announced in death. Let their death be known everywhere, he says, for the blasphemies with which they slandered You, telling lies about Your glory. “Death” does not mean the final death of a people, but the fall of its glory. And his “glory” - the services under the law, God’s church, prophets, high priests, teachers of the Law, the appearance of Angels, all this ended suddenly after the death of the Lord. Ps.58:14. And they will see that God rules over Jacob, and the ends of the earth. Those who have been deprived of all glory will know by deed that You are the Lord of Jacob, and have spread Your Church to the ends of the earth. Ps.59:15. Will return in the evening. He repeats what was said before in order to make the prophecy about them more solid. since he said: in wrath they will die, and they will not (Ps. 58:14), so that no one would think that the prophet contradicts himself in the words: “I will squander Thy strength” (Ps. 58:12), by the way, he used repetition, saying: “they will return,” since in these verses there is ambiguity of expression. This is explained by the example of dogs, which, having gathered for some food, before touching the food, devour each other, and therefore often disperse, leaving the food. Ps.58:16. They will be filled with food: if they are not satisfied, they will grumble. They will go everywhere, looking for the word of the Lord, and will not find it. And if when, having taken any saying of the Divine Scripture, they think to enjoy themselves to the full, then in this case they will “murmur”, like the ever-present murmurers and scolders of God. Ps.58:17. I will sing of Your power. So it will be with them, and I, that is, the pagan people, as having known Your power, will rejoice in Your mercy revealed in the light, and in the day of Your resurrection, because through the resurrection You became our intercessor and refuge in sorrow. Therefore, I offer psalms as a gift to You, God, who had mercy on me. For you were my protector and my refuge. For I have always used Your help, and by Your providence I avoided the disasters that befell me. Therefore, I know You, the only God, and I call You the source of mercy and love for mankind. Having seen this long before with prophetic eyes, blessed David predicted the disasters of the Jews, and he himself made a vow to always sing songs to the Lord, and fulfills his vows, lifting up songs through the lips of the pious.
