Chapter 29

Ps.29:1. Psalm of song, renewal of the house, to the end, to David. Renewal of the house, or the Church, occurs when, after the decay of our outer man, the inner man is renewed. David sings this psalm upon liberation from sin, and as if upon renewal of his soul by repentance, which has long been the home of the Holy Spirit. He also sings, giving thanks for the remission of sin, praying to remain safe from sins in the future, and teaching a lesson to others, if something like this happens, to offer prayers to God. Ps.29:2. I will lift you up, Lord, as you lifted me up. Ps.29:4. You saved me from those who went down into the pit. Ps.29:5. And confess the memory of His holiness. Remembering God's love for mankind, we must offer up chants. Ps.29:6. For His wrath is in His fury; not because he wants to be angry, but because everyone incurs anger upon himself by his sin; for His will is life. These words signify the success of repentance. For there is no such multitude of sins that repentance would not quickly turn into joy. Ps.29:7. Az Rekh in my abundance: I will not move forever. Explains the reason for the fall. because, he says, during times of prosperity I thought a lot about myself; and for this very reason he was embarrassed. This happened to me, not because You led me to it, but because You only turned Your face away from me. So, since we cannot stand without Your strength, do it in order to fulfill Your will for me and so that the beauty of my soul may shine again. Both Adam, living in paradise before his deception, and Hezekiah, having defeated the Assyrian, had such hope, which the book of Chronicles clearly teaches, saying that “the heart was exalted” of King Hezekiah (2 Chron. 32:25). Ps.29:9. I will call to you, Lord... Ps.29:10. What good is there in my blood if I never descend into decay? I beg you to take me out of the ditch, for Ps.29:12. I will not confess dust to You. There is no benefit to me or others in my descent into decay. And You take my life, and others will not gain any salvation from me. And if you hear my voice, turn crying into joy, gird me with joy: then this will be of considerable benefit to me; for, having received my former glory, in glory, and not with an evil conscience, I will speak to You. This is what the word means: Ps.29:12. Thou hast torn my sackcloth to pieces, and thou hast girded me with joy. He called crying “sackcloth” because when weeping it is common to put on sackcloth. Sackcloth means vice and ignorance, because sackcloth is made from the hair of goats supplied to the ears (Matt. 25:33) and from a young goat released into the wilderness (Lev. 16:10).
