For those who have not suffered anything of this kind, and have not shown the fruit of faith, but who voluntarily fled to the land of malice, to which cowardice and fear betrayed them, and who are now coming to repentance, it is necessary and appropriate to apply the parable of the barren fig tree, as the Lord says: A certain man planted a fig tree with his own vine, and he came looking for fruit on it, and did not find it. He said to the vineyard: Behold, this is the third summer, when I come again, looking for fruit on this fig tree, and do not find it: does he cultivate the crops, the whole land, and the ground? He answered and said to him: Lord, leave her this summer until I dig around her and sprinkle her with pus. And even if he produces fruit, he will cut it off in the future (Luke 13:6-9). By placing this parable before your eyes and showing the fruit worthy of repentance, over the course of only a short period of time, that is, four years, you will receive even greater benefit.
