He [Paul], being under the law of Christ and observing the highest law, was to those without the law as without law, to the Jews as a Jew, being in both respects more perfect and superior to all. Do the same: do not think that you are falling if, being high, you do something humiliating for your brother. This does not mean falling, but condescending; whoever falls lies down and can hardly get up; and whoever condescends will rise up with great gain, just as Paul condescended alone, but rose up with the whole universe. He was not being a hypocrite; if he were a hypocrite, he would not seek the benefit of those being saved. A hypocrite seeks the destruction of others and is a hypocrite in order to take, not in order to give. But he is not like that, but as a doctor, as a teacher, as a father, the first to condescend to the sick, the second to the student and the third to the son for their benefit, and not for harm, so does he (12).
