A Word on Faith Addressed to the Alexandrians

The ineffable unity professed by the right-minded preserves both natures unmixed and makes one visible Christ from two [natures], one and the same, becoming at the same time God and man, not two Christs, but one Christ, united, not mixed. After all, if two natures, different in essence, are mixed in one mixture, then neither of them is preserved, that is, both are destroyed when mixed. They do not allow either separation from each other, or division when they are mixed, but they separated at the moment of death and separated [from each other] the soul, which descended into hell with the Divinity, from the body, and the body, separated from the soul, was laid in a new Tomb, exactly according to what Christ said: “Destroy this church, and in three days I will raise it up” (John 2:19). The Church was destroyed during His three days' stay in the Tomb, as He wished, and He erected it again, and was reunited with it in an inexpressible and ineffable manner, not being mixed with it and not turning into flesh, but keeping unmixed in Himself the properties of natures different in essence, for natures were never mixed.
