Originally from Lycaonia, the city of Lystra, the son of a pagan and a Jewish woman; when Ap. Paul preached in Lystra, then his widowed mother, who had converted to the faith, entrusted him to Paul, who gave him to worthy teachers to teach the Scriptures, and a few years later made him a participant in his Apostolic labors and, finally, left him as a bishop in Ephesus. He died a martyr: because when, one day, during the riots and debauchery of a pagan crowd in honor of the gods, he denounced him, he was beaten to death by the frenzied. Christians placed his venerable relics outside the city, where a church was subsequently built. Rev. Leaving the monastery of Jerusalem and visiting various places, he arrived in Caesarea Palestine, still occupied by the Persians, began to denounce their wickedness, was captured as an apostate from the faith of his ancestors, and, as he did not agree to renounce Christ, was sent to Persia for trial, where he was sentenced to be strangled with a rope (622). The Zhabynsky monastery at the mouth of the Zhabynya river, which flows into the Oka, 5 versts from Belev, was founded in 1583 by the elder Onuphrius, but in 1614 it was ravaged and burned without a trace, like Optina Pustyn. Rev. Macarius had to rebuild everything from scratch: build a church and cells, gather the brethren. This was not easy at other times, and when the entire region was devastated, the elder had to endure hunger and cold for a long time in the ashes, he endured everything for the Lord, and after that the Zhabynskaya hermitage was called Makariev. It is believed that his patience and labors were responsible for the restoration of the Optina Hermitage, which was devastated by the Lithuanians, which was also called Makarieva. Image of the Rev.
