Blessed memory Maxim, Metropolitan of Ugrovlakha In the world he was called George; was the grandson of the penultimate Serbian sovereign (despot) Yuri Brankovich, the son of his son Stefan, who wandered outside the fatherland, and Angelina, the latter’s wife. Stefan received estates in Srem from the Hungarian kings, where his family began to live. Since in this country, where many Serbs fled from the Turkish yoke, there were no churches or priests, George built several churches at his own expense, invited Metropolitan Levi from Sofia to appoint priests, and in 1496 founded the monastery of the Mother of God in Krushedol, where he himself took monastic vows. Radul, the governor of Ugrovlahia, invited him to his land in 1503 and made him metropolitan; under Radul's successor, Mikhna (1508–1510), Maxim returned to his monastery, but in 1513 he was again summoned by the governor Nyagoi Bessaraba. However, he did not live there long and, returning to Krushedol, died in 1516. His relics rest in his monastery, which since the 18th century became the seat of the Serbian patriarchs in Austria.
